The Grand Prix this year has got off to a roaring start!
Group 1 has 16 members, up from 5 last year. Martin Walker has taken an early lead by entering 3 races in the first 6 weeks of the year, but Michelle Day and Alex Wright are snapping at his heels with high scores and PBs in just one race each.
In Group 2, Danny Farndon has scored 43 points off just two races. Kieron Carvell, Jayne Chappell and Andrew Archer are not far behind, having run 3 races each and achieved PBs in most of them.
So if (like me) you haven't started scoring yet, it's time to start thinking about entering a few races And it doesn't matter if you haven't registered yet - as long as you are a member of the club, you can join in any time during the year. The sooner the better though if you want to see how well you are doing in the rankings!
Entering times for the grand Prix is easy - just email matt@uknetrunner.co.uk with details of your official race times. Full details are on our main website at http://www.uknetrunner.co.uk//page.php?12
Matt has set up a shiny new computerised system this year , so we should be able to expect regular updates. (And we can shout at Matt if we don't ).
It doesn't matter about how fast or slow you are - the Grand Prix is all about how well you perform relative to your own performance last year. So that means we all have a chance of winning... Are you up for the challenge?

Hurrah! I started scoring this week. Only got a tiny 2 points, so I'm not challenging the leaders yet
Danny Farndon has a massive 90 points from 4 races, but he has a ways to go before beating Martyn Thorpe's score of 232 last year. Martyn has yet to enter a score this year - keeping something in reserve, perhaps.
Steve Gunn, last years group one winner, and holder of the trophy (did you actually get a trophy, Steve?) is languishing at the bottom of the group without any points to his name.
It looks like things are going to really get moving once it starts warming up and the spring race season gets into full swing. Anyone ready to start predicting an overall winner yet? |

Yes, I actually received the trophy yesterday, and very impressive it is as well! Currently has pride of place atop one of my speakers!
As for my non-existent score so far - I won't be competing until my injury is properly recovered, so my powder will be remaining dry for a wee while yet.

Well the early form in group 1 appears to be Michelle, Brigitte, Alex and Nick, who have all scored over 10 points in a race. Michelle and Alex have the highest average scores - 12 points per race.
In group 2 it looks like a fight between Danny and Kieron - but the year is young.
It's going to be a good one I think. My goal for this year is to move up a group (to 8) - so ideally I'll be looking for scores of 9-12 points for all the races. We'll see what happens at the MK Half.

Excitement at the top of group 1...
Club rocket Nick Houlton recorded his 2nd BAND 0 time at the Bramley 20, netting a massive 18 points.
Alex Wright, however has fought back with a hugely impressive sub 70 10 mile, scoring 20 points.
Can Nick taunt us for our poorly thought out bandings by scoring the first ever BAND -1 time? Can Alex go even faster as his marathon training continues? Will I score 12 points at the MK Half on Sunday? What do the other competitors have up their sleeves (or shorts)? |

The bands were not poorly thought out (except we have to add an additional band each year due to certain speed freaks!!!)
I just never expected the club to acquire such a speedy rocket as Mr Houlton ..... that's no complaint though - it's an honour to have the club featuring so high up the placings in events!
It will be a very interesting Grand Prix this year - being far more hotly contested than before, with more entrants, more competitiveness and some people have already qualified for promotion to Group 1 next year.
As for my Grand Prix this year .... I'll just be happy to stay in Group 1 and pick up the odd point or 2 here or there - and my leg feels like that might actually be possible now !
Interesting to see that last years' winner isn't even off the starting blocks yet !!!

Last year's winner is still recovering from injury! All the same, I'll probably be eating your dust if we ever get to compete in the same event!

David Robertson has already recorded 8 races in the Grand Prix this year! He's going to be hard pushed to reach Danny Farndon's amazing 148 points, but I have to applaud the attempt.

Group 1 still seems to have a lot of flexibility at the top. Jon Jenkins is now in second place with 47 points (Alex is still at number 1 with 57). Dips and Nick are joint 4th (on 28), but with one having run 5 times and the other only twice, there is plenty of space for upset.
In group 2, Danny is still at the top of the board, but only a third of the way through the year, there is still plenty of opportunity to knock him off the top spot. David Robertson is now up to 11 races - is there no stopping this man?

Have you seen? Martin Walker has clocked up 20 races already this year!!! But how elusive is that Grand Prix title... he is still 100 points behind the Group 1 leader Alex Wright. Come on Martin, we love your consistency, but you need to create some new PBs if you have a chance on the top spot
David Robertson has 18 races in the bag - if he was in Group 1 his 73 points would get him into 2nd place but in Group 2 he comes in 5th behind high scorers Danny Farndon (229), Kieron Carvell (137), Peter Perren (122) and David Brook (93).
Nearly half way through the year, but still plenty of time for positions to change. Don't forget, to be in Group 1 next year you need to have qualified this year by sending in your results for races from 3 of the following categories 1) 5K or 5 Mile 2) 10K or 12k 3) 10 Mile 4) Half Marathon or longer. |

I will have to try harder, am doing plenty of races but PBs seem to have dried up ! Really enjoying running though so not too worried at the moment.
Hope to get a PB at Mablethorpe Marathon in September
Martin.

| Hi P.B's are great but as long as you are injury free and enjoying running it doesn't matter. Keep running all and have fun. Peter |

We're nearly two thirds of the way through the year now, so time for those with less than three 'qualifying races' in the Grand Prix to start planning in a race or two to fill the gaps in order to you remain in the running for a prize. Don't forget that you have to have entered a minimum of 4 races in the Grand Prix in order to be in group 1 next year (Martin Walker and David Robertson are both pretty safe in that respect, with 25 and 23 races each at least count.)
There has been some movement on the leader boards. In group 1, last years winner Steve Gunn has snuck into second place with 59 points, but is still way behind Alex Wright who is now on 197 points.
Group 2 also has a new challenger. Jamie Barry has registered 7 races for an impressive 155 points, but is still trailing Danny Farndon. Danny has been in the lead since day one and is now on 229 points. He is going to be hard to beat, but there are a some high scorers in group 2, so still 4 months to knock him of the top spot.
So get out there, and get racing!
