Are we due an update on this soon? (I think it's been a week now )
Maybe the forum is a better place for Sutts to give us quick updates, rather than the logistics of updating the main site..
I'd love to know what I'm aiming for in some of the races I'm running. (I'm about to go into a block of 4 races in 4 weeks, so I'm slightly focussed at this point) |

Hi,
sorry for the delay on this one.
I have been compiling the data sent in so far and have latest scores to publish.
This has been a delicate area as it was felt that as certain members have had much better starts to this year than their running went last year they may "run away with the competition" so to speak.
However, we will be sticking by the rules announced pre-competition and publishing up to date data - including scoring systems - over the next few days.
One point to note - if members have improved times this year they will have to do even better next year to do well in the Grand Prix system in 2006 - hopefully things will start to even out as time goes on (and we will review the system to tweak it for next years' grand prix).
I hope that makes sense and will let you know when further info. is available - I will aim to get the data on the Website within a week.

Hi Alan - I found the beginnings of the gp2 page One more tedious rules clarification question...
If I run 2 10ks, get a pb in both of them and submit both races for qualification points, do I get the PB bonus (because I got a PB twice) or once, because the 1st one isn't a PB any more?

Fancy finding my page 2 of the Grang Prix on the site - that's still under construction (will be finished in next couple of days!)
In answer to your question: Yes, you will get bonus pb points for each pb race - so if you are lucky enough to submit 5 10k times and each one is a pb, you will get 5 x pb bonus points !
Hopefully all will become clear when the site is finished and I will put an explaination of the scoring system on the page with live examples to assist.

Another question. We can have up to 8 qualifying races. Suppose I run more races than that - can I submit all my races as they happen, and my score will be generated from the best results, or do I need to hold back and only submit the best 8?

Thanks for the update Aluaka... very cool. Part of me wishes I'd not run 48:20 on new years eve 2004, and gone into this with a 10k pb of 52:30 .
I love tables like this, my 5k goal was to break 22 minutes. After looking at the banding, I can see that this is a waste of time and I need to run sub 21:40 (similarly my 10k target for the year is now 44:44, rather than 44:59 )
Has there been a change to the scoring plan? The original page talked about 5 points for hitting your band, +3 for a pb, +1 for every band higher than your handicap, -1 for every band lower than your handicap (so to recycle the examples, Aluaka's 5k would have scored 10 points, Laura's 5k would have scored 3 points). This tweek seems to put more of an emphasis on absolute performance, over relative personal performance. (not overly fussed really ) |

That's a fair point, I think. This tweak certainly tilts the balance in favour of the more accomplished members, and away from the less accomplished but improving members. It also reduces or negates the effect of the handicapping system as well, which presumably is meant to level the playing field across abilities. Maybe there is a justification in that the higher the band to start with, the harder it is to get a result in an even higher band - I don't know whether that really is the case in real life, though.
Of course, it will make little difference to runners like me who are having a bad year compared to last year, so I don't have a personal axe to grind (well, not this year anyway! ).

| Dull question. Entered the London duathlon in Sept, 10K run, 20K bike, 5K run. Can the 10K and 5K runs count towards the club Grand Prix? |

Laura,
You can run as many events as you like and enter them all for GP consideration. Personally, I am going to pick and choose what events I send to Alan for inclusion, those being my best 8 performances within the criteria.
Richard. In an event like the London Duathlon, results will include splits, so the answer is yes you can have them included in the GP. |

Aluaka, Sutts, I wondered where the comparative times came from for the ranking tables. I've looked at all the performance predictors I know of (reigel, cameron, purdey, Vo2Max, age grade, McMillian) and non of them correspond to the grand prix tables.
I'm particularly interested as they show a faster slowing down as distance increases than all of the above. I certainly feel this table is more representative of my idea of equivalent performance than some of the above methods (which I presume are based on analysis of elite athletes, rather than lamo part-timers like me who don't have 10 years of endurance building behind us) |

****** GRAND PRIX UPDATE ********
18th September 2005 - I have posted a major update o the Grand Prix standings from the results I have been forwarded. Don't forget for your results to count you have to be in it (ie a registered member who has submitted their best times of 2004) and you need to submit your race details (date/event/distance/time and if personal best or not) to: uknetrunner@aol.com
We will only include submitted races in the Grand Prix.
Take a look at the standings on the website: http://hometown.aol.co.uk/uknetrunner/grandprix2.html
Only just over 3 more months to go ....... who will be the winner of the UKnetrunner Grand Prix 2005 ????

I'm not a betting man but .......
..... I bet he's going to have a hell of a tough handicap in 2006 !
That's the beauty of the Grand Prix - after the initial "wearing in" period - it should even itself out.
It may even be a wise move next year to have 2 leagues - one for existing runners (say of 1 year +) and one for newcomers - until they acquire a more realistic handicap.
