Apparently there are dicussions under way about raising the unaffliated race entry levy from one pound to two. The Northern Counties AA have agreed to it, Midlands are undecided and the South are about to debate the issue.
Personally I think this will be a good thing, it might encourage the many unaffliated runners to join a club and so support the continuation of running as a sport.
What do other forum posters think?

I agree it will help in the funding of running clubs if the unaffiliated fee goes up, but alot of "fun runners" dont bother about higher fees and so wont join a club, and quiet a few dont even know of a running club to join. So the question being, would it be financially viable for a running club to promote its self in the off chance of getting a few extra members, or not?
Maybe one for the Committee to tackle.

The committee have looked into this. This is the reason why Dips (Ladies Capt) posted the article to attract new members you dont have to look for the running club the running club is HERE. You can join with out leaving your house and still enjoy reduced race entry.
Application information can be found on the home page

I understand what you are saying Carl, but not all "runners" know about uknetrunners.
When I entered the Sheffield Lord Mayers 10k, the organiser had not heard of us!
So all I am saying is if Organisers dont know about us, what chance has the general runner have?

Thanks for your views Colin.
UKnetrunner is gradually increasing, but as a non-profit making club covering the whole of the UK it is going to take some time to be "well known", if indeed we ever reach that level.
Word of mouth makes all the difference - as does seeing the club colours at runs across the country.
There are ideas being thought throgh and tried - but any other ideas are always appreciated - remember though we have limited funds available for promotional activities.
There will be a new scheme launched very soon which promotes members' bringing friends or other runners into the club - which will offer a benefit to the member by giving a discount off of their next year's membership - the more people intorduced, the higher the benefit.
More details coming very soon.
Let's all do our best to increase the membership of this great club this year !

Shut up moaning and see if you can think of some good ideas to raise the profile of the club. It'll give you something to do in these non running days too

As long as we get some positive results out of any membership drive, I don't care how much "moaning" there is (although you must have mis-understood me as I wasn't accusing anyone of moaning!)
Non-expensive, effective ways of promoting the club sound good to me !
(After all I do look after the club's accounts - so I know what we CAN'T afford !!!)

Have you tried having flyers printed and added to goody bags at races?

Hi Steve,
Yes we have tried the flyer idea by putting them on car windscreens in race car parks at a few events - and still have flyers that we can use in this way.
Getting in goody bags is not an easy option if a club is involved with the race - but one that we can explore and try further.
Thanks for your thoughts ..... all are appreciated !

Out of curiosity - did the flyers on windscreens drum up any interest?

For an internet based running club internet presence would seem important in getting known I would have thought?
Have you tried optimising your home page at least so that it gets a higher and more appropriate listing in search engines - for instance if I search for "internet running club" or similar uknetrunner wants to be up there!
At the moment the top listing is "Runners Web UK". That site has a list of UK running clubs - is uknetrunner listed there? No. Should it be? - Yes!
Also, having proper web hosting would help rather than just web forwarding to some free webspace which is often penalised by some popular search engines.
I don't think you can beat word of mouth, or recommendations though.
One thing I would like to see would be the geographic spread of members, as I think this may encourage some to join if they can see others in the area. Perhaps something simple like a county map with a number showing how many members are in that county. Of course thatmay put someone off if there was no other members in there county so you could offer a discount for the first member in each unallocated county.
Finally, I would also like to see a FAQ which states which acount the subscriptions are paid into (if you'd come from realrunner's forum you'd know what I was on about!!!).
Anyway, my first post her and some first thoughts. Feel free to ignore them, I;m used to it! |

Thought I'd come and spend some time on the other side as "Jen baiting" becomes a bit boring after a while! We'll see how things go....
