Well after nearly a five hour drive last night...owning to a closed Tyne Tunnel and multiple hold ups... I slept well and the day dawned damp but dry.
We had stayed less than a mile away from the start so after coffee we plodded over. I was open minded...I have avoided 5ks to date but if I am to improve my half and full mara pbs I need to take speedwork seriously.
So this was about finding a benchmark and building over the winter.
After a lap to warm up we bumped into Alan and Brenda before the start. It's a beautiful setting, very relaxed, up to the start and we are off. Determined not to blow up in the first km. I held back as the boys disappeared in the distance, went through the first K in 4:43 feeling strong and controlled at this point.
Pushing on towards the end of 2K I was starting to overtake other runners, when suddenly a runner to my left slipped dramatically on the leaves, tried to save himself in the mud and leaves, but hit the earth. Looked very painful and I stopped to help. He had twisted his ankle in a pot hole, waited with him as he caught his breath and a friend arrived, once I knew he could get himself back to the start I went back to the race.
Found getting my stride going again very difficult and my heart rate was all over the place. Pushing on up the hill was tough and the third K was my slowest ....... but I found I was actually enjoying myself!
Had stopped my watch when I stopped to help the other runner so crossed the line and my stopwatch said 24.26 but officially it will be slower.... so guess what ..... back for more next week! Middlesborough here I come!
A 5k convert.... who didn't puke!
My splits where 4.43, 4.45,5.26,4.30,4.47 and 13 seconds... vagaries of garmin!
And then coffee, bacon butties and banter with Alan and Brenda... a great start to Saturday...now Michael just has to face my Dad!

Well done Claire and credit to you for stopping to help that guy - admirable!
Glad you enjoyed it though and are now a convert. I'm sure you'll really see the dividends pay off in terms of speed. It will surely reflect in your other distances.
I'll be doing Gorleston next week. I've really missed the Parkruns.
Well done again and you didn't puke

Well done Claire - seems a long drive for a park run - or have you got other reasons to be in the area?

Definitely a time to beat - Sunderland next time!
As for the faller I understand he had just been distracted by being overtaken by a female club mate! And no it wasn't me.

Claire - you could've used my name!
Many, many thanks for stopping to make sure I was ok - I wasn't and having someone there to check helped a lot!
Incidentally I hadn't been distracted by being passed by a female fellow club runner - she hadn't quite passed me at that stage - more like I was distracted of thinking of ways to catch up with a fellow male club runner who was only just ahead of me and heading for the hilly bit!
Still nursing a pianful foot and ankle .... hopefully it will be better soon and I can be back in my running shoes again!
(And Claire: I didn't see you enjoying the bacon butties - you could do with a little meat on your bones!!)

Cheeky b*gger! Bliddy pass you next time I will!!!!
Lincs...it's a lovely park but has a long slow pull uphill in the 3rd km which slows all down. But I think its a fab event and a real chance to see how training is progressing.
On the results I am 4th girl to finish but on my stopwatch time I would have been first....still theres one a week...our Chairman only has 2 legs! And the 3 ahead are a lot younger too!
Found out there is one in Sunderland so going to give that a try Saturday.

Well done Claire, especially for stopping to help Alan. Surprised you didn't puke up all over his shoes.
Get well soon Alan.

I was going to post my race report but tbh I think most has been said. If you haven't tried a parkrun then can I suggest you do ...... friendly, relaxed, supportive events. By and for people just like us.
This one hurt me ..... but a 20 something lad kept me going through the 4th K, chair stopped me from stopping then, I got a kid running again in the last K and regalvenised the 20 something lad soon after. You don't need a supportive crowd when you have runners
