It is a series of personal accounts of ultra-running, many of them the various 100 milers of which there seem to be many in the US. Some of the stories are totally awe-inspiring and the repeating theme is that it is the mental attitude that counts. The mantra that I am taking away to use at The Druids (tiny in comparison to their exploits but a long way for me) is "In ultras I am competing against the distance and myself rather than against my fellow runners". I am well aware this is not the view of many (most) others but for a tortoise like me, it is what keeps me going.
I am well aware I am never going to win anything, or even get near it, but with the right mental attitude I can beat the distance
