it's not daft really, rules are rules. If you're in contention for prizes you need to make sure you obide by the rules. It does seem a bit harsh to completely void her time though if rules in the USA allow people to wear mp3 players providing they're not racing for prizes.

that's what I meant really - that "non-elites" are allowed to use iPods and "elites" are not - still, I don't know how they'd police it if it was a blanket ban

they have blanket bans at some events in this country and I've seen results where people have finished a 10k in an hour (and obviously not a prize winner) but have been DQ'd.

It's a health and safety issue, particularly for events that are run on open roads. Organisers are required to get all kinds of insurance and people wearing MP3 players can invalid aspects of this.

But regardless of what some organisers say it is not currently banned by UK:A. There's no mention of music devices in the rule book. Although the rules are due to be updated next year so who knows!

Slighty away from the point. But when spectating at a local road race back in Feb....runners were being told (shouted at!) to take their ear pieces out during the race. Most complied, if only until out of sight of the race official. However, one woman got quite emotional as she said she couldn't possibly run without her iPod!

I suspect the officials don't have a lot of clout in terms of disqualifying runners.

Whilst I love my MP3 player on training runs I have seen first hand the problems they can cause in races particularly around the start when its congested and space is at a premium. The Birmingham Half last weekend was a case in point. I know it sounds harsh but I say ban them for all races.

When I ran the Grunty Fen HM there was an ipod ban but several runners ignored the rules. The race referee was riding through the field on his bike and was constantly intercepting runners wearing earphones and forcing them to remove them.

I think tha the threat of DQ is the only way to stop runners flouting the rules.

Whilst I feel for the girl being disqualified..... she knew the rules and still brke them. Im a bit fed up of nearly falling over or having my races disrupted etc by mp3 wearing runners. What happens if one of them got hit by a car or missed an important direction from a marshall etc. BAN THEM! Plus they miss out on atmosphere.

Whilst I appreciate the possible danger of running with MP3 players (some of us avoid the i-thingies!), I personally find mine very useful to keep me going and am still very cautious at junctions / where traffic is present!

I ran my stage of the RNR with MP3 player for company (especially useful at 5am in the morning after a sleepless night - and to drown out the ticking over of a car engine behind me .... and Dips & LB!)

I do find it generally motivatonal.

Generally in shorter races I don't wear it .... as I find enough to keep me going in the competition and have even been known to chat to fellow runners - but I wouldn't dream of contemplating a marathon without it. I think the music tackles my mental issues with running!

For elite runners - I agree with the ruling - as they are competing for positions (but I have no danger of entering that category!)

(I'll prepare myself to be put into a field ..... Kenny Everett style!!!)

Why should it be any different for elite runners though? It's a safety concern so that surely applies to all runners, no?

I suppose if you look at it from the point of view of being potentially performance-enhancing, that's where it comes into play for elite runners. However, I agree - certainly in mass participation events or any event where there are roads involved (without closures), it's a safety issue.

Fair point ..... just a preference!

Why do people run? Some for competition, some for fun - and for some the "assistance" of a music player helps them get out.

It's an issue that will go on I guess ......

indeed, which is fair enough in training. I have a racing friend who uses an MP3 play on his long runs. But the issue here is not with regards the general use of MP3 players, but the use of them in races. I use the word race deliberately. These are races, hence why there is a start/finish line, timing, race numbers, positions etc etc. Regardless of whether you're at the sharp end of the race or the tail end, it's a race.

As to whether it's performance enhancing. I know some people claim it helps them, and maybe it does. But personally, I don't see it. And I don't believe that's why MP3 players are banned in some races - it's purely a safety issue.
