Great Eastern Run 2009
Met up with Deano & Dom before the start and god ready for the start, got in to my pen (start area) & met up with Jon H, I’d decided to start in the 1hr30 -37min pen (PB was 1hr 38min) but when we was called forward (as you are) suddenly I felt I was at the front of the field and I thought WHAT THE ….. am I doing here? Too late to move back so it was grin and bare it time or so I thought
1100am – and we’re off, being so far up the field I thought I’d get passed by loads of runners BUT I didn’t, infact I was passing runners in large numbers ( maybe I should stop thinking about other runners & focus on my running)
for 8 miles I was on my target of 7.20m/m or better & I wasn’t being passed by runners & I was keeping pace with those around me, I was also feeling quite comfy even though I was working hard, I had no aches or pains & was determined to keep at the pace I was at
At mile 10 I started to slow a bit although still well under 8m/m, I felt I was going to have to try and dig deep, I also started to think I had the wrong trainers on because although they where padded under foot and very light, I was missing the extra cushioning to spring off and increase speed, although this may have been in my mind
On the run in (3miles) I pushed as much as I could and remained under 8m/m which I’m happy about but just missed out beating my distance PB and finished in 1hr 38mins 12secs and 453rd out of 5000+ runners (or so they said entered)
Really enjoyed this event ALL roads closed and the locals out in support, maybe I could’ve worked harder as I have no real aches or pains after, which brings me back to thinking too much about other runners around me = note to self stop thinking just RUN/RACE next time
Av HR 172 bpm = WHR85% / Av Pace 7.31m/m

Great performance to get as close to your PB as that after the year you've had. Well done Wicked.

Well done Shaun. As others have said, just focus on your own running, what others are doing is irrelevant. You can look forward to next year with some optimism as I'm sure you can progress from here.

I THINK AT TIMES WE SOMETIMES THINK TOO MUCH ABOUT ETIQUETTE AND RACE DO'S AND DONT'S.....
stops shouting.....
i also think you are a better runner than you believe and obviously your posistion in the pen was far more founded than others you still weaved to pass.....so basically as said.....focus on you and your race....
well done mate...

Congrats on a great race Shaun - and so close to your PB!
As Matt commented don't be fretting that you're not suffering aches and pains after the event either You're obviously getting things right in preparation. I also agree with others that new PB's are just around the corner.
Well done mate!

Great run Shaun. Good to chat (briefly) before the start. This run should give you confidence that everything is heading in the right direction for nailing that PB v soon.

Thanks everyone for kind comments, overall I'm happy & agree I probably dont have any aches and pains after as I got my prep right, some peeps at work thought I'd be stiff BUT I'm not
I also agree we runners do sometimes think more about ETIQUETTE AND RACE DO'S AND DONT'S & as Stephen P says, what others are doing is irrelevant very true
ALL your comments are true and I've taken them on board, its this sort of thing that makes this club so special to me
I'm now REALLY focused on sundays Spires & Steeples Challenge 26, if I can get anywhere near my road mara time (3hrs 43mins) i'll be MORE than happy BUT my real target is to beat my Sea Bank Mara time of 4hrs 6mins as this mara is also mainly off road
thanks again
