The mass start wasn't until 10 but we arrived early to ensure a parking space and watch the world half marathon champs start. Missed the elite women as we were standing in the wrong place but saw the men set off at a staggering speed and watched some of the race on the wide screen.
This was my fist mass participation event. I have always though that GNR and London look really appealing on television but in my starting area (not really a pen, just different coloured balloons) I was not enjoying all the hype and crowds, and I missed chilling out before the race like I usually do.
It took about 12 minutes to cross the line, it was crowded but ok to get into a decent rhythm and I was 8.50 minute miling which felt ok. We soon got onto the route that I do regularly in training and the lovely Cannon Hill Park. I felt fine until about 7 miles, not out of breath, calm and steady and keeping exactly the same pace. I also wasn't having any trouble with my recent shin and calf problems.
At about 8/9 miles my legs started to feel heavy and strangely I stared to feel the same effects that I do when I struggle with the heat, swollen fingers, headache and nausea. I was confident that I could get through it though, as it wasn't hot and there was only 4 miles to go which was mostly downhill. At 10 miles though I died and had to walk, felt so sick and my fingers were tight as they continued to swell.
I ran walked, really wanting to drop out. At 1 and a half miles to go I was still on for sub 2 if I had got back into my 9 minute miling but I could hardly pick my legs up. I was heaving and even walking was exhausting. I crossed the line in 2.05 and had to sit down, I felt wrecked but not in a way of having run hard, just feeling so ill. Someone from my local club) picked me up and it was good to see a friendly face and gave me the strength to attempt what felt like a very long walk to get goody bags and medals.
Another half and disappointed again. I don't want to sound so negative yet I don't understand why this happens. I don't feel like I went off too quick, I have been on for 1.50 - 1.55 pace in training, I felt like my water and fuel was right???
In my frustration I entered the Bedford half in December when I got home. As Laura commented on my facebook status, don't get mad, get even

Not sure ive any ideas to your problems but krissie, you stuck with it and carried on. and 2.05 is not that far from your target. You were unlucky today, put it down to experience, recover and move on. Dont ponder on it. Do Coventry half on the 25th and i'll run with you

Sorry to hear it didn't work out Krissie. Focus on the next as you're doing and confine this one to history. You clearly weren't right on the day.
Hope your injuries are out of the way ASAP!

Well done for getting to the finish, Krissie. Sounds like a bit of a mare. Hope you manage to nail the cause of the problem before your next half.

Bad luck Krissie. Perhaps it's due to coming back from those injuries? I dunno.. Sometimes it all clicks into place, and sometimes it doesn't.

Well done for sticking with it Krissie.... maybe take up Lincs offer at Coventry? I would if I were you
I think its easy when your pals are runners and you are in clubs to underestimate what a significant achievement running a half marathon actually is.
Be proud. x

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. Yes you have a point Claire, I guess I still did get to the end of a half marathon when I was feeling terrible.
Thanks for the offer David, I have cross country the day before though so don't it would be the ideal preparation for my half marathon pb attempt

Sorry to read about your distress - just ask Claire about my GNR last year 2:06 and I could hardly move in the last mile and nearly died after I stopped. 6 months later and a PB so stick in there keep thge training consistent and targetted and you will beat it.

Well,I did post something yesterday but is vamooshed again!
Anyway...well done young Krissie...hang on in there you have millions of years to get that sub 2 hour. Re the headache and nausea, I have a tendancy to think it is hydration related...as for your legs going wonky...mine do all the ruddy time! Come to that I feel sick at the end of most efforts. but seriously, it was mild yesterday (I think) and its often easy to forget about water when the sun isn't blazing.
Bedford is a bit of a lumpish course but I think lumps work better sometimes. If I was up to speed I would offer to run with you, in fact if I was up to speed I would be asking for Lincs to pace me at Coventry.
Keep going girl, your doing great and hopefully see you at the NTRIX?

well done for finishing krissie, it would have been easy to stop but you didnt, you'll get your targets and maybe you need to stop thinking during a race and just look a head, not sure if it'll help BUT I too have had negative thoughts during recent events and needed to think of runners a head of me to keep me going
keep going at it mate your doing great

Well done Krissie for sticking with it. I've also had a few ups and downs lately. In my experience a bad run is usually followed by a good run, so what you need to do is have a bad training run and I guarantee you'll have a good event run.

| Well done Krissie, quitting is the easy option but you kept going. You need the occassional tough time to give you the mental strength to push through "good" pain when you're running well. This experience will make you stronger and will benefit you in the future, regardless of how frustrating it must be at the moment. |
