Matt Leatham had the idea a few years ago of a club only relay - along the route of the Leeds / Liverpool canal.
This never transpired .... but we were smaller then.
What about something of this nature?
Ideas:- - Leeds / Liverpool canal - Coast to coast - eg Blackpool to Scarborough
Not sure what approval we would need for it ... or if there is interest - but it wouldn't be a race - simply UKnet running along a pre-planned stretch?
Coast to coast is interesting - one side of the UK to the other ....
Thoughts?

Not a bad idea Alan. I'm sure there are many route possibilities you could choose from really. Would certainly make it interesting if there was at least one other team of course.

Plenty of options of routes of course (I chose the example of Blackpool - Scarborough as the country gets narrower as you get further North - refer to Geography O level notes! Also there are UKnetrunner members at both ends of that route, and in middle)
I would envisage the need for cycle support only - and flexibility to make the stages as long or short as we choose of course.
(With plenty of BANNER points on the route!)

Sounds good Alan
Of course we could always run around Worcestershire ...or Norfolk again, but in reverse - that would make leg 12 a doddle
Of course I'm not biased in my selections.

nice idea.. keeping off the roads (so making it a canal/towpath or a trail) run would cut down on loads of potential issues and wouldn't require any permission

Just worked out a route of Blackpool to Scarborough (via Preston, Skipton, Harrogate, York) of around 133 miles !!!
Could be reduced using roads off the main road.
Potentially though it is well and truly possible.

Mat's original idea was called something like "Follow the Sun" and was to run the Leeds/Liverpool in Mid Summer, giving the maximum hours of day light.
The challenge was to run the canal towpath leaving Leeds at sunrise and finishing the run in Liverpool by sunset. A charity could be involved and lots of publicity could be generated from local radio and press along the route. Any amount of runners could be involved with perhaps a minimum of 10 - 12.
An extension to the Liverpool end has now been completed. impressively it now terminates in front of the Liver Buildings. If all participants were to escort the last runner over the final mile or so, what a picture that would make in the Liverpool Echo?
Well, it would get my vote

We did briefly throw the idea about last year for my birthday run...I think? Much safer to stay on a tow path and the Leeds Liverpool sounds as good as any. I think it ws Pete that suggested finishing with the Liverpool half marathon.
However, not to be a damp squid, we had all this enthusiasm last year after RNR and nothing much happened.

Great idea and sounds fun, depending on timing, would be up for getting involved.

It's true, but I think this will continue to surface from time to time until some one emerges who is willing to make it happen. Not something to be undertaken lightly, perhaps something for the committee to keep in the pending tray.

Hi Alan, another option for a coast to coast theme would be the C2C cycle trail. This runs for 136 miles from Whitehaven in Cumbria to finish in either Sunderland or Newcastle. It's well signposted all the way and much of it is on off road trails or quiet minor roads. Oh, it's got some stonking great hills. More details:

I would be intersted in either... finishing in front of the Liver buildings would be fab ...but equally finishing in Newcastle would be splendid!
I could then host the post run supper
I know what you mean Dips but last weekend made me realise how important it is to prioritise getting away and doing something i love.ie running ...and when I can doing it people I like is even better.
I would be prepared to help and do some of the organising.

I agree that the towpath idea sounds a good option - off road - with cycle cover easy - and I would have thought that no permission would need to be sought(?). The logisitcs of getting all the early stage runners to Liverpool for the last stage would be the main planning to consider.
Leeds Liverpool canal is also scenic in many places (and flat!)

I like the ideas. The towpath option would make it more varied and potentially safer.
We would probably have to get permision from British Waterways (or whatever they call themselves now).
Dave, having taken a boat from Skipton to Burnley and back I can vouch that there are definitely some inclines along the way - you would need someone with fell runners legs on the stretch passed the Bingley 3 and 5 rise locks!
We would need to check that the tow path is both accessible and passable all the way along. Its a while since I did any canal boating but in the more remote areas the towpath can be decidedly dodgey. I am sure BW could help on that.
If the timing suits I would definately be interested
