Don't know how I missed this weekly FREE event .... especially as the start line is literally a mile from Bren's house!
Weekly 5k series - every Saturday at 9am - in a looped route within Heaton Park (just off the M60/M62) 5 miles from Manchester.
FREE to enter - I don't even know how I missed the Parkruyn concept - enabling you to turn up and race at any of the Parkrun events once you have registered FREE.
Bren & myself will be at the start line on 26th Sept (this coming Saturday) - I tried out the route last night .... and it's not the easiest 5k - with a lovely little climb just after 1 mile.
Should provide for additional weekly encouragement for us both .... and be good for the budget too!
Checkout the Parkrun series at: www.parkrun.com
(Note: Registering also produces a voucher for £15 off of running shoes at Sweatshop and the Barcode card produced also entitles the bearer to 10% off at a running shop in Arndale Centre, Manchester - HerunsSheruns - not bad for FREE!)

the parkrun thing is growing massively at the moment.. there's not one that near to me but loads of new ones are springing up all the time.
and, annoyingly, the Reading one is right where I work, and covers where my lunchtime runs always start and finish these days.. too far to go for a 5k at the weekend though.
I'm raising money for much needed resources and materials for a school in Uganda. Please sponsor me to run the Beachy Head Marathon at http://justgiving.com/Busenya2 |

| They need to get one going in the Midlands. Unfortunately, I don't think there's much scope for one in any of the Derby parks. |

Not sure about Derby but:-
Wollaton?
Clumber?
Holme Pierrepont?
Newstead Abbey?
Calke Abbey?
Plenty of opportunities - only needs a few paths that can be turned into a multi-lap 5k. They even run along a cliff top in Gorleston! Could've done that as training last Saturday am!!!

they could probably do one in Long Eaton actually, 2 laps of the park. All nice and flat.
Would be nice and central to pull Notts & Derby runners. |

Have done quite a few Parkruns now, but only Cardiff mostly and Gorleston Cliffs (Great Yarmouth)
Great concept and helps to stay sharp if you can do them regularly or miss a midweek speed session.
Have got two coming up soon in Great Yarmouth and will be hitting Cardiff again very soon. Mike annd Claire will be there too, although Claire doesn't know it yet Mike said she loves 5k's

Alan...I think you have been asleep since January!
I can recommend the Brighton and Hove Parkrun...I'm there near enough every week. If not running than I marshall/time keep or hand out the discs. Not been let loose with the camera yet though

Talking of Park runs...I saw Bev at the Brighton and Hove one this morning, 3rd lady. Fishy and Alan will remember Bev from the days of old. Not sure anyone else was around then.

Quite like this run (though had to be dragged kicking and screaming from my bed this morning!!). Was a bit concerned I would be last but I wasn't (my time should be with me this afternoon) and even beat a f***h runner.... Hooray!!! Can't wait to do it again... |

Goodness, that's taking me back awhile! Did you suggest to her that UKNR is the place to be?

Next 5k Parkrun Race: Saturday 3rd October
I'll be there for that (Bren has to work unfortunately!) - but after sampling the event, the bacon rolls and the latte last week (at the cafe RIGHT NEXT TO THE FINISH!!!) I'm sure i'll be back many more times!
I may also be joined by another UKnet vest?????

| I'll probably be up that way next weekend (10th) in which case I may well appear at HP and/or Gin Pit 5 on Sunday. |

Be good to see you there Mike .... and I can strongly recommend a round of 18 hole pitch and putt afterwards in another part of the park! (After the bacon barms and latte of course !)
Bren & I will return this Saturday (10th October) for another go ... why not - it's very local, friendly, well organised ... and FREE!!!
