Hi all,
I am a 38 year old married father of two just getting back into running. I have thought about joining a club for a while, but like many of you I would find it hard to commit to regular training times. Uknetrunner seems like a good answer. I have been reading the race reports and the forums and you all seem nice and friendly.
I started running again after my 4 year old asked me if I had a baby in my tummy, that was a bit of a shock. A friend of mine was organising a 10k for a local school so I thought I would enter (in the end I couldn't make the race but did the Thames 10K Jog in the park in 1:01:03). So here I am addicted to running again. My last race previous to this was the 1998 Reading Half marathon which I finished in 1:55 I'm hoping to improve on this in the Henley HM on 11th October.
I run early before work and my weekly mileage is about 20-25 miles. I try to run off road around the countryside, along footpaths and bridleways. I love the loneliness of running at 5.30 a.m. out in the middle of nowhere with just the cows and the rabbits.
So I look forward to getting to know you all and wearing the uknetrunner vest.
Andrew

Hi Andrew and welcome to the club. I look forward to reading about your races and training - start a member diary and you'll get lots of feedback and advice.
I see you're in Reading - I work in Reading (live in Guildford) so hopefully I'll see you at a race sometime soon). |

We are the answer Andrew...do join us! There are a few members located close to your area so you should bump into them occasionally.
Well done for doing something about the 'baby' and I hope you continue to enjoy running.

Hi mdunn77,
I read your race report on the Yateley 10k with interest as I had entered that race as well. Unfortunately I dropped out after about 2k with agony in my buttock. I had no idea what it was. I couldn't run for a few weeks it was to painful. After some research I figured I had a tight piriformis gripping the sciatic nerve. Now I'm often seen sitting on a tennis ball which believe it or not really helps.
I should defiantly see you at a race, I grew up in Sandhurst, so I'm checking the races out in that area, then I can kill two birds with one stone and visit my parents as well.
Cheers Dips for the nice welcome. I have paypal'd the joining fee just waiting on the email, should I go medium or small on the vest? |

Depends what size you are Andrew...how many months are you?
Seriously, it depends on your size and if you prefer a tight fit etc.I prefer my vest to have room to move in and to wear a top underneath in the winter.
Perhaps the guys are better equipped to answer this?

Hi Andrew,
I'll respond to your Paypal payent with an introductory mail asking for your full details and vest size.
I would advise to go up a vest size - so if you normally go for Medium, go for large (the sizes are on the snug side).
If the size is wrong I will be happy for you to return the item and send you a replacement of a different size.
Welcome to UKnetrunner - I'm sure you have chosen the right club for you - and good luck with your running!

Hello there! Glad I;m not the only one with a baby in my tummy
These folks are great and despite being miles away up the hill I still feel part of the club. Hopefully get to meet you one day when I start venturing further afield with my races again.
Best of luck with your times - I'm sure with those regular miles and now the extra support and encouragement (occasional virtual kick in the a*** ) you'll do fab

Hi Andrew and welcome to our club. Although I live in the Fens of Lincolnshire, I was born in Reading and lived and worked there for 30 years. My first running event was the Reading Half Marathon back in the 80's.
I like you couldn't join a local running club because I run my own business and simply cannot commit to regular club meets. I sometimes find it very hard to find any training time at all during the week.
We have a fantastic bunch of people in this club of all abilities and everyone is very supportive of each other. That's what makes this club so great.
Look forward to meeting up with you soon.

Hi Andrew - a big welcome from me as well. Our paths are sure to cross at some point, as I'm just up the road in south Oxon (Chinor, to be precise). I'm thinking about doing the Reading 1/2 next year, as haven't done it for a few years now.
Anyway, you've made a great choice in (a) returning to running, and (b) choosing to join this club. I'm sure you'll find it as supportive as you need. The forum is a very friendly place to hang out, so do feel free to read or contribute as much (or little) as you like!

Big welcome to the club. I only joined this year and can certainly confirm that by some strange force - just wearing the vest & posting on the forum improved your pb times straight away (well road races anyway - I'm still working on the XC!). |

Sorry I didn't spot your post earlier Andrew. A belated welcome to the club.
I'm sure your running will benefit as a result of joining UKNR. Although I'm prepared to race pretty much UK wide, I tend to race mainly in the Midlands, East Anglia and South Wales, so I hope to catch up with you at an event or two soon.
