Made my mind up to go and run this race last night..
Got to berry hill at about 9am, paid my money 15 pounds on the day enter.Went back to my car to get ready, saw mike and had a chat. Overcast but still very warm, i put some sunblock on after the humber half 2 weeks ago ( getting burnt).
Anyway time for the loos, then to the start. No plan for this race just see how it went, 10am and we a off. I set of way to fast 7:51 first mile, try ed to slow down a bit 8:22 .. going up and down a few hills along the way, 8:18, 9:09, 8:59.. 5 mile in 42:30..felt very good..
Got to 6 mile and need the loo again 9:00, 9:16 loo stop, 9:08, starting to feel it abit now, 9:29 and 9:23.. 10 mile in 1:29, on course for a PB at this time.
Then on the next down hill bit twang god that hurt, both quads went very tight , at to slow up very quickly. Walked a little bit then slowly started to run 10:39, 10:15 , last mile very hard work 10:46, 1:11 finishing garmin time of 2:01:52 avg hr 165..
Very mad about this race , all was looking great for a Pb at 10 mile then all down hill. This is very hard for me to take but now at home with ice on quads .
Colin potter 10k on Friday night so hopefully should be ok for then.. rest all week i think..
Maybe 2 half's in 2 weeks is to much for me...
Hope you all had a good weekend...

I always find downhills hurt more than uphills. Higher impact and longer strides make it pretty tough on the body.
Hope the quads ease up this week. Might be an idea to go for a gentle run tomorrow or tuesday to get blood to the legs and help them recover. |

| Bad luck Deano - sounds like it was going well. Take it easy this week but do get out for a recovery run if you can. |

| Well done Deano - I always find the last 3 miles of a half tough. I think you held on pretty well considering your blistering start. |

Well done Deano, still a very good effort. Rest those weary legs and I am sure you will come out fighting for the 10k.

ouch Deano, best advice I've had for running downhill is SPRINT or go as fast as you can seems to work though as holding back and relaxing seems to jolt and hit the muscles
hope ur ok mate and be CAREFUL if you race the 10K you mentioned and quote: Maybe 2 half's in 2 weeks is to much for me.
the simple answer is NO mate
so get that thought out of your head, having run 2 full maras in 8 days, I would say focus on which half you want to do well in or treat them BOTH as training with company with pace
take care

A good result all things considered.
I have developed an odd way of coming down - I try to shorten my stride (doesn't actually happen) but by trying to land it underneath my body I end up going faster and faster to the bottom - no energy wasted breaking on the heel, maximum conversion from potential energy to kinetic energy, and minimum jarring of the body. Mind sometimes it scares the cr*p out of me like at the 90 degree turn at the bottom of the hill at the NTRIX.

| I tend to lean into hills, lengthen my stride but also increase my cadence. In other words, I leg it as fast as I can without falling on my face :) |

I lean forward slightly and don't hold back. If anything though I tend to shorten my stride. I've read that you're more likely to do potentially more damage holding back than if you go with it and capitalise on the gradient.
Downhills are also supposed to aid in increasing turnover/cadence. I've read that greater stride length is more likely to cause more damage to the quads on downhills due to the lengthening and greater impact.
