In view of the various updates on ITB thought I’d give you some info on this which I have been suffering from (and I mean suffering) for the last two or three months, hence my reliance on large quantities of Nurofen Plus at recent races (and lesser quantities to train although have had to miss a lot of that).

When I asked my Sports Therapist why I hadn’t heard of it before he said people often mistake Trochanteric Bursitis for ITB. The main difference between the two is that the pain from Trochanteric does not go down the leg as far as the knee whereas ITB does. It affects the outside of the hip and upper part of thigh causing excruciating pain (honestly) with every step, whether walking or running. The bursa is on the lump of bone on the outer side of hip called the greater trochanter. Bursa are all over the body and are supposed to minimize the rubbing and friction between two tissues. Apparently the trochanter muscle is designed to slide over the bone with every step but when it becomes inflamed and enlarged it cannot get move freely, hence the pain.

Unfortunately there are almost no exercises that can help. My Sports Therapist manipulates the muscle to try to teach it to move over the bone again (and I can hear it ‘pop’ when he does) but until the inflammation and swelling (he tells me he can see one hip is bigger than the other although I did tell him it was probably fat) subside there is not much else apart from taking anti-inflammatories that can be done.

Try these links:

I discovered them while trying to find something to help my wife - who has had a painful hip for a long time - the exercises have helped a bit.

One theory seems to be that the piriformis muscle gets tight and pull the hip ball and socket in too tight - the stretching "loosens" the joint and eases the pain.

Worth trying.

Many thanks for all the advice. Had a problem with piriformis some time ago so logical the two could be linked. Will be madly doing all the exercises now.

AndyS - Some excellent exercises there. Had trawled the net before but hadn't found such good sites as you. Did a variety of them in the gym last night and could really feel them working it AND it does feel a tiny bit less painful this morning. Hopefully will get me through Cornwall, not to mention Lochaber. Fingers crossed. Thanks very much

Mrs W, would it not be a tad more sensible to forego Cornwall and get better for Lochabar...rather than risk a set back?

No won't set me back honestly - it can't be much more painful so might as well clamber over a few rocks . The three compressed vertabrae at the base of my spine are much better so its not all bad news and anyway I wouldn't like to think I've caused redundancies at Nurofen Plus because I wasn't buying so many

Sometimes you just come up lucky with Google!!

Don't overdo the nurofen - it can do funny things to your stomach.
