Aim high is my attitude too. I managed a sub-3 in my first marathon off a 1:25 half marathon PB. It's possible if you put the work in, although I'd recommend at least 4 20+ mile runs before the marathon.
18 miles at race pace will probably take too much out of you. It's better to run a progressive run (say 22 miles). Start slowly and gradually build up so the last few miles are slightly quicker than race pace. That will condition you for running quickly when tired, without tiring you as much as 18 miles at race pace will.
Thanks for the advice. Glad to know a sub 3 is possible from a 1:25 half. I've ran a 1:25 half in training, and hope to knock a couple minutes off that in the Edinburgh half in April. Will definitely get a few 20 milers in before the race in May and that's good advice about progressive running on the 22 milers. I'll give it a shot :) |

Hi, and welcome to the forums. I would say that I'll see you in Edinburgh, but at that pace you'll be long gone before I even cross the start line! I look forward to following your progress in your diary and wish you all the best with achieving your sub-3 target.

Hello again too!
I'm with you on the 22 miles - I only managed 21 last year as the route was a wee bit short so this year there will be a 22 miler in there for me. Although - your mileage and achievements seem fab already
Like they say - think about the club .... it's lonely up here sometimes
I may be doing Edinburgh Half. Rather than the Edinburgh 10k I am planning my 22 mile LSR as the Edinburgh to North Berwick race the day before. I'm in the marathon too - I managed Sub-4 for my first one and hope to go a bit quicker this time.... I'll look out for you on your way back to Musselburgh!!
If you are interested - 1st March is a 10 miler at Lasswade (that club host it - may be Rosewell or something officially) and 29th March a fairly fast 10k at Grangemouth.
All the best with your running plans
Thanks for the info on the races. I would like to do a 10k and 10 miler in March, so will definitely check them out. I'd like to do some small events before the half, 10k and marathon.

I'm definitely a glutton for punishment. Just signed up for the Lasswade 10miler and the Grangemouth "round the houses" 10k. Thanks for alerting me to those races ;) The 10k is exactly one week before the Edinburgh half so I hope I don't burn myself out that week :)

Ha ha! I best get myself signed up too now that you've gone and committed - otherwise I'll feel guilty

Have you run the Lasswade before. it is described as a challenging circuit. I'm wondering if I'm likely to beat my training PB in this race, which would be my goal. I've ran 10 miles on a relatively flat route in 64:08. Think I can beat it in this race? My ultimate goal this year is to make sure I beat every one of my training PBs in race conditions so that my times are "official" ;) |

Lasswade is definitely challenging - it's the only 10 miler I've ran and last year was only my 4th race and remains my weakest PB (1:27:58).... I did run faster in 1st 10 miles of Marathon 2.5 months later however - I had massively improved in that time. And to be honest other than my 2 miles and my Marathon - all of my PBs were on hills
So... that hasn't helped at all! LOL. Not sure I'd manage sub 1:20 but reckon close to 1:21 is on for me this year all going well. I find the hills give me something to key on and almost rest bits of me - uphill using one bit... downhill another - it's the flat that kills me
erm.... sorry - have I tricked you int something you didn't intend You'll get you time and I reckon it'll still be faster than your flat training run - and gie you something to improve on in you next 10 miler
