Hi Everyone. New member here. I'm a 34 year old man who has been running for 3 years now. Have always ran alone and never bothered with running clubs or anything, but I am a bit obsessed with the whole running thing. I decided this year that I should start racing, as my training runs have been quite respectable. I completed my first race this year - The Edinburgh Great Winter Run 5k. I was over the moon to finish 13th and shatter my best ever training time for 5k. I posted a race report in the report section if anybody is interested.
Now have 3 races coming up. The Edinburgh Half, the Edinburgh 10k and the Edinburgh marathon. Want to complete all those in times faster than I have done in training, then maybe do some more 5 and 10 k runs later in the year. Next year I'd like to run some XC.
Well, that's a little about me. Hope to have some good running chat in the coming months :)

| Thanks Heavyweight :) I'm really looking forward to upcoming races, especially the half marathon. Can't say I'm looking forward to the full marathon though. I do 15-20 miles on my weekend long runs, but I imagine those last 6 miles are a killer. Don't know if a sub 3 hour will be doable on the day, but I'll give it my best shot :) |

Welcome aboard JBB...does this mean we have another member over the border?
Well done on your 5k and good luck with your up and coming challenges, there are a few UKnetters running the Edinburgh Marathon. I did last year and managed a PB so anything is possible.

I once read that 20 miles feels like about half distance in terms of effort in a marathon and from my limited experience I can certainly vouch for that.
Are you following any kind of training plan for the marathon? Usually the longest recomended training run is around 20 miles - so it's great you are at that distance already. |

I've never really followed structured training plans tailored to specific races. My regular running involves 35-40 miles per week in 4 or 5 sessions. usually a long weekend run (15 miles or more) then some 8, 6 and 5 mile runs during the week. I try to do some Fartlek and speed sessions and recently introduced some hill work, but in general I just go with the flow. As long as I make up my weekly mileage and get some race pace runs in regularly, I find I'm ok with that.
For the marathon, I'd like to get at least a 22 mile run in before the event, and do an 18 mile run at marathon race pace (around 6:50). |

| Good luck with your training, and your sub 3 attempt. 18 seems a very long way at race pace - but I'm no expert. |

I think it's worth doing for a psychological boost. I'd like to know that I can run most of the distance at target race pace. Same with the 22 mile run. I know a 20 miler is reccomended, but I'd like to get at least one run close to full distance before the race so I know how my body will react. I know a sub 3 hour will be tough for my first marathon, so I won't be gutted if I don't get it. But I believe it's good to set high goals. Although 10ks and half marathons are my best distances, so I'm hoping to do well in those races. A sub 3 marathon will just be a bonus for this year. The Edinburgh marathon is the fastest in the UK, so it's a good place to aim for a fast time. If I don't crack 3 hours in that race, I might go to Berlin in September ;) |

Hello, and a big welcome. As has already been said by others, that is a very impressive first race result. I confess that I didn't read the full report (I at least need to look as if I'm doing some work!), but it looks like we have another rising start in our midst. Well done, and I look forward to seeing how you progress as you get more race experience!

Aim high is my attitude too. I managed a sub-3 in my first marathon off a 1:25 half marathon PB. It's possible if you put the work in, although I'd recommend at least 4 20+ mile runs before the marathon.
18 miles at race pace will probably take too much out of you. It's better to run a progressive run (say 22 miles). Start slowly and gradually build up so the last few miles are slightly quicker than race pace. That will condition you for running quickly when tired, without tiring you as much as 18 miles at race pace will. |

JBBury - I read your race report very impressive VERY well done and I'll re-submit a quote here
quote: although I can't say the actual racing was always enjoyable. It hurt a lot and required me to fight negative thoughts and the desire to ease off. I had never pushed myself that hard in my running, but the joy it brings when you finish is immense!
the above quote from YOUR report speaks volumes about racing and the after effects and should be worn on a T-shirt, which would be a big seller amoungst runners

Hello again too!
I'm with you on the 22 miles - I only managed 21 last year as the route was a wee bit short so this year there will be a 22 miler in there for me. Although - your mileage and achievements seem fab already
Like they say - think about the club .... it's lonely up here sometimes
I may be doing Edinburgh Half. Rather than the Edinburgh 10k I am planning my 22 mile LSR as the Edinburgh to North Berwick race the day before. I'm in the marathon too - I managed Sub-4 for my first one and hope to go a bit quicker this time.... I'll look out for you on your way back to Musselburgh!!
If you are interested - 1st March is a 10 miler at Lasswade (that club host it - may be Rosewell or something officially) and 29th March a fairly fast 10k at Grangemouth.
All the best with your running plans
