........do you think i'm a contortionist !! (not sure on the spelling)...........nice video though
Looks like i am in a spot of bother, as i have said had a bit of a nagging pain anyway went for a run on Tuesday did'nt feel too bad but really as soon as i started i got pain in right calf right side top end, had to stop several times it really was very uncomfortable i know i should have turned round straightaway and not bothered but i was out for some 30min. Anyway it is now Friday i am back home and have been limping for the last three days, basically everytime the leg is straight when walking it is quite painful i have tried the leg up and ice a couple of nights but nothing has changed. Will see how it is this weekend, there does not seem to be any swelling. I think it is all sciatica related, when i sit and stretch the leg i can feel a pain in the backside (no pun or jokes!! ) not that i have ever suffered with this before. Anybody any ideas of a cure. I think this has come about by running downhill last week quicker than normal and in trainers which needed rreplacing

Sorry to hear that, Ian. The only suggestions I can make are continue the RICE (esp the Rest, as it may now be beyond the point in time that ice will be effective), anti-inflams, and to see a pro if it is not clearing up by, say, Monday. Best wishes in the mean time.

Ian - if it is sciatica related and something i've suffered from I can highly recommend a TENS machine
http://www.patient.co.uk/health/TENS-Machines.htm
see above link for what they are and how they work (if you dont already know)
they are not a cure BUT they do aid recovery and act as a pain relief, I still use mine sometimes on my back but also if I have an ache in knees or shoulders
you can pick up a simple TENs quite cheap that will do the trick
its worth a try
hope you recover soon mate

Ouch! Ian..if you can bend over do so as if you were going to touch your toes but just let your arms dangle without forcing your fingers to touch your toes...unless of course they do quite easily. Keep your legs straight but soft knees. Might also find rolling on a tennis ball helps..so sit on it and roll over it with each cheek If that makes sense?

Well another week no running but have walked to work and back Mon to Wed which is a good 20min each way, but have had some weird sensations in right calf area, one day it felt like it was tearing itself apart at one point but then the pain seems to go, but i never seem to have two days the same, there is something not quite right still but can't quite put my finger on it

Ian..you might find it worth getting an expert on the case. I have always had a regular sports massage which I swear by.

Hi Ian - you say you "can't quite put your finger on it" - I wondered if this is literal & if you could find a sore spot in your calf if you self massage? If you can then I understand it would be likely to be a local injury rather than sciatia related.
Of course the above is caveated by "I am not an expert" |

Cheers all for the thoughts and theories but think it is definitely sciatica related as getting in and out of car today has resulted in pains in the backside again and moderate pain up and down leg, its not agony don't get me wrong just more annoying than anything else, i am tempted just to go for a gentle trot on grass just to see how it feels.

six weeks with no running now and frankly no improvement, trip to docs few weeks ago basically told me what i already knew, prescribed some painkillers for a fortnight which has been and gone and done the job but now pain is back again, away to Cyprus in just over a week so will go back to docs when i return, but have also invested in a tens machine to try and reduce the pain, together with some ibuprofen to get me through. Looks like i need to look at physio of some description now, Docs said should right itself within 6 weeks....WRONG! I am trying that stretching exercise that Dips sent for your Piriformis and also the heat treatment and trying to improve my posture and even taking breaks in my trips to/from London now

Hope it all sorts itself out soon Ian. It must be really frustrating for you. Incidentally, Gill tried a Tens machine on her shoulder and it certainly helped her. Surprising really, as we were both sceptical about how successful it would be.
Good luck and enjoy your hols!!!
