W/C Monday 30th March (9 weeks to go) TOTAL 42 miles
Monday Total 4 miles Joined the group a bit late as new I couldn;t do whole session tonight an Monday an me sometimes don;t go well together. Then they'd started sharp cos football was on - which also decided to start the game sharp an we were ducking an dodging the misaimed ball in the last 3 runs so the session was cut short! W/U then 800m - 3:22 / 2:45 recovery jogging 5 * 300m - 70 69 68 65 61 W/D
Legs heavy but happy they were moving - really not bothered to have not done anymore
I've just gone over 1000 miles since I entered Edinburgh on 1st Jan 2008 and started recording my training better - only did about 50 since the July before

Tuesday - TOTAL 6.75 9am - 3 miles / 26:51 (avg 8:56) - a tad faster than planned. 12:30 - 3.53 / 35:55 (10:43, 10:36, 9:48, 9:04 pace). The middle Jog Scotland group at lunch, one promotion from beginners and lass who only ran once in a few weeks due to illness an work so started out nice an easy an convinced them to speed up if we used Tesco as the finish rather than face the road and traffic back to work May have another recruit for the 10k
Didn;t run home as still in work at half 9 an need to run to an from garage for car MOT plus the wee group tomorrow night so that could be loads enough for me
Today makrs the end of March an my highest ever month 159 miles. I know I jumped the miles up (more than originally planned) but all seems well mainly as I have done lots of little runs so less pounding on me poor wee legs. This esp. as still aware of my NTRIX foot/ankle - doesn't hurt but is still odd so didn't want to do too many single long runs.
Bring on April, mid week longer runs and my LSRs
Month totals.... January Total 65 (last year 64) February Total 58 (last year 103 but I didn't go on holidays for 1st 16 days!) March Total 159 (last year 105)
Wednesday TOTAL 9 miles 3 miles to work from garage. 27:26 (avg 9:12) Car so busted it's not going to be ready till tomorrow so need to work out how to get there as tomorrow is my no running day 6.1 miles with my wee buba 10k Group - 1:01:57 They are doing really well an running faster without too much effort. One even commented he'd never felt this good after a 10k
Thursday Pilates 45 minutes
Friday Left about 5 or 10 minutes after than my planned 6:30am start. No breakfast but Thai Green curry last night about 7:30 pm then a bagel before bed at 11:30. This am I had a Sport Whey bar when I got up at 6:20 and carried a bottle of blue Powerade with me (first time I;ve used that). My wee bag of Jelly Babies was eaten at my desk 18.5 miles / 2:51:02 (avg 9:15) 1st couple of miles spent waking up as I ran through thick fog which cleared a little as I headed through Holyrood park but thick again at the coast as I passed my housed and joined my usual route. I like speeding up as it feels good to know I can. At my desk at wee bit late at 10:15 Feeling loads better than even my 15 milers last year
10:12, 10:26, 9:57, 9:31, 9:25, 9:14, 9:27, 9:29, 9:01, 8:59, 9:07, 9:06, 9:09, 9:58 (a mile uphill), 8:40 (mostly flat or down form now to work), 8:31, 8:19, 8:10
Saturday REST was going to recovery run but spent most of it sleeping or lounging and I knew I'd be out an about tomorrow so saved the runnign till then
Sunday 3 miles / 25:49 (8:36 pace) - 8:55, 8:25 8:29 Was supposed ot be recovery run but watching the Edinburgh Half was a bit too much excitement for me it seems and my wee run ended up too fast
Bus then walked to Portobello Promenade and cheered till almost everyone was by then ran through musselburgh beyond the racecourse to that last long stretch home and cheered some more Why on earth did I keep nearly crying when watching mainly the folks after the 2 hours mark come in looking exhausted but stil going Some with charity vests on some without but I get getting teary (it is nearly that time but still)
Spotted JBBury and a few others I know on both stretches so felt pleased with my efforts
So - that ends my week at 42 miles. Matches my highest ever Monday to Sunday week last year with 6 weeks to go and also included an 18.5 LSR (that was accidental I only just checked back my diary)
Other than a bit sleepy and today wee bit stiff after running too fast I feel great
8 weeks and it'll be all over once again

Ann That is a big increase from the previous month, it does'nt seem to have affected you, but beware, i'm sure you know what you are doing but normally everything points to around a 10% increase in mileage and yours is a heck of a jump. As you say lots of little runs as opposed to great big ones so maybe thats the differance.

Thanks guys - I'll be careful
I think work has made a big difference compared to last year - I stopped being a Team Leader (a role i didn't really want) in a rather hectic technical support department for a bank in about September. The out of hours / overtime requirement has also dropped dramatically in the last few months - so I have lots of time to eat sleep and rest
I was also buying a new build no-idea-when-it-will-be-ready house and selling flats leading up to last years marathon.... I still am selling flats but we just kind of forget about that chunk of money that disappears every month until the bank hassles us again The stress isn't the same now
For anyone who knows me I used to live on a shift pattern of 4 or 5 hour sleep at night with another hour here an there on evenings or weekends. Many a night was spent in the pub - last year I kept up the partying just without most of the alchohol! Once I started running I gradually started to sleep 5 or 6 solid hours at a time but work would often interrupt it or disturb the pattern. This year I party way less (am I getting old ). I now get 6 hours solid sleep nearly every night usually 7 and it feels great This month I think I will be moving up to 8+ hours when the LSRs kick in
So, in summary - this year I am a mainly 35 hour week happy mainframe techie (in a job very flexible regarding when I do my hours) with a lot less sleep issues than I've had in the past and a a nice shiny-ish house an wee garden with home grown carrots, potatoes and broad beans on the way (that's what OH tells me) All good for making a happy recovered runner
Saying all that - I am on call next week till after Easter weekend so miles may drop

Good luck with the training Smout.
I know how sleep deprivation affects me, so I hope you manage to get the balance right for yourself.

Thanks LBG
Got plenty sleep Wednesday night (7 hours solid) so last night before my LSR only in bed about midnight, woke at 1:30 to wee, work at 3:45 to wee again (no - I'm not pregnant or have bladder issues - I'd eaten an drunk to ensure I could get out the door with no breakfast or much water ). Up at 6:20 and out the door before 6:40
18.5 miles later, in work an working by 10:15 and I'm still upright an don't feel too bad at all I intend to be in bed by 11-ish tonight tho

Yep - think I may be a wee bit mad but really enjoyed the feeling of having 'done it' a few weeks ago when I did 14 then 16 so thought I'd just try again. I feel so relaxed an happy knowing I don;t have to spend tonight and maybe even tomorrow psyching myself up for it It is also good to feel so much stronger than last year - when I could hardy walk after my 14, 15 18 and 19 milers! The 21 was the only one when I finally seemed not too bad but today was definitely nicer

Well done on the huge run and especially before work!
Don't you find reactions by non running work colleagues amusing?! People always say to me - "hows the marathon training going?" when referring to anything from a 5k to a triathlon and even though I have never done a marathon. Some also only ever ask me about how training is going when they see me like I don't have anything else of interest to talk about. I am frequently inserted into the Citizens Advice Bureau monthly newsletter along with embarassing mistakes such as "Krissie completed the 5k run in 53 minutes" which fortunatly means nothing to most of the readers with the exception of the odd bacon butty scoffer who smugly comments that "he could walk it faster than that". The most annoying one however is the need to point out "ohhhhhh you seem to be constantly eating...and then follow it with "oh but you must burn off all of those calories of with all that running don't you". Hmphhhhhhhh!

LOL Krissie - I hear lots of folks say that but to be honest my work colleagues are pretty good. The know the difference between a marathon and a 10k an they don't ask if Edinburgh is as far a London! The ones that don't know so much actually ask sensible questions like "4 minutes sounds a lot quicker what pace is that?" They even appreciated the 4 miles into the wind the other week and still at a speed faster than they ever touched on the gym treadmill
I even have my wee group of folks all wanting to run and others around saying I'm doing well getting them out an running. Almost 10k on Wednesday night and the non-runnners are well impressed with them I thnk I am quite lucky to have relatively clued up folks to work beside
I'm sure they must say some bad or stupid stuff - but my brain has good filters

W/C Monday 6th April 8 weeks to go!!!!! TOTAL 28.5 miles This is my 1st on call week right to the end of Easter so is a planned step back week. Feels like the timing is right as I am a wee bit tired (think Friday LSR still in me) but happy to not be feeling anything particularly bad
Monday 3.5 miles Track yay - the footballers were gone an tonight we had it to ourselves. All 3 girls an Ricky looking atfer us!
.5 W/U 6 * 2minute runs (target 480m / 3k pace ) - 515m, 520m, 520m, 535m, 545m, 550m. As usual I was late and missed one but kind of suggested I do the last one (even after treating no 5 like my lat one )... an he was pleasantly surprised I got so far on my own The recovery was intended to be around 1:45 but Ricky I think just based it on us as we were al running fiurther than targets and the track is a bit of a shock as we've been off it soo long! I tried to jog mostly in the recovery. .5 W/D Was hard but I really enjoyed it and felt so much better after than before
Tuesday REST
Wednesday 6.59 miles Unfortunately I;ve only had 3 hours sleep maybe a wee bit more broken as work called at 00:30 and I got home again after 04:30 then alarm at about 7 but OH had to get up an head out so that was me awake On a normal work day I'd have stayed in be but I was doing a REXX course today and too much fun to miss it
I do however feel better for my nice run with my 'Bupa 10k group'
6.59 miles / 1h 07:01 (avg pace 10:10). Legs felt a tad heavy but nothing a nights sleep wont sort out. I;m very happy as one of the ladies (who, despite her day off, avoided wine with lunch an came to work just for the run) had never run further than 10k ever until tonight an she feels fine They are comfortably running faster than 4 and 5 weeks ago and over 2 miles further
We'll see how I sleep tonight before any anttempt at a lunch time run tomorrow
Thursday REST - was just knackered really. Worked late too an walked home around 8pm
Friday REST Had early bed last night intending to up early an LSR. I gt up an had breakfast but just not enough sleep and was hungry again before it was even time to go out. Had another breakfast an nipped back to bed then darn work phoned so on phone an laptop for three hours meant now I needed to eat again! Still tired anyway so decided to jjust leave it another day.
Saturday LSR 18.5 miles / 2:54:09 / avg 9:24 My back-up on call was happy to cover me while I ran so didn;t have to go loopy daft between work an home afterall Same route as last week except last mile straight on rather than turn right to work Busier two an a half hours later on a sunny Saturday rather than foggy Friday. Much nicer in the sunshine than the fog! Although there was a bit of a breeze on the coast bits heading West.
Splits - 9:50 9:58 9:54 9:43 9:43 9:10 9:15 11:33 9:13 8:58 9:08 9:22 9:21 9:56 9:17 8:53 8:34 8:27 and last .5 at 7:30 pace.
11:31 included a 2:25 pit stop at my house.... how hard to convince myself do not go upstairs, do not speak to David, do not think you need an extra drink..... get back out the house!!!!
Back to being on call
Sunday REST Was going to recovery run but work called at 5:30, if fixed it quick but then mooched about then tried to sleep again at half 6 an when I finally got up... well I had to go to the shop an prepare to BBQ
SO the week ended on my 1st under 30 since W/C 27th March but as it's an on call week which can put me in a mood even when I'm not called - I don't mind. Last years lazy weeks or on call weeks really dropped - this week last year was 24 miles with a 13 mile both before an after - really don;t know how I got round 26 miles last year

W/C 13th April - 7 weeks to go TOTAL Highest ever weekly mileage 48.5 miles run + 4 miles cycle
Monday Total 5 Miles inluding W/up and down Really didn't feel I'd be up to much of a track session tonight with LSR Saturday and V late night last night - am I allowed to say I'm getting old?? My 21 year old niece still 'singing' (my family don't sing) on guitar hero and I'm lying on the sofa guitar in hand with my eyes shut between songs at 2:30am in the morning LOL
Anyways track session - after a decent jog warm up (for a change) quads still feeling my LSR but not bad at all I set off...... 1 * 85 second run - Trial Run - 2 minute recovery 12 * 85 sec run 35 / 40 sec recovery
My target is 360m but ricky says that's if I was training solely for this - 5k type stuff not marathons - just aim to get round them all the same. 12 * 320m is better than all over the place or stopping...... we'll just how I get on...
Trial Run 360m (didn't know that till after next run)
Then 365m, 360m, 360m , 360m, 360m, 360m, 360m, 360m (lass in front stops here an Ricky checks how I am - I'll try 2 more....), 365m, 360m (another look from Ricky - think I;m ok), 365m, 370m
I was fairly hot an exhausted but very happy - Ricky came towards me after the last one an said I'm 'a very gutsy lady' Stubborn might be the word I would use He was pleasantly surprised I did them all an at that target - my strength is showing now
Anyways - on call finishes at 8am then I'm free to run all week
Tuesday 3.8 miles / 37:20 . BIt of a guesstimate cos none of the Garmins on show today wanted to get the satellite for a bit! This was the Jog Scotland group at lunch. They are getting faster - my legs felt it today. Not bad just knew the were running
Wednesday Was decided as a REST and postpone Wednesday group to Thursday But then realised I cycled the 2 miles to and back from work before climbing about an getting itchy in my mum's attic till late! I haven;t cycled for a very long time other than the bring the bike here - oooo is all I can say
Thursday 7:20am - Cycled 2 miles(ish - haven;t Garmined the way we went yet!) to work 5:45pm - About 6.3 miles with Edinburgh 10k group 8pm - Cycle 2 miles home from work
Darn it now have to log back into work cos I found a problem with my stuff I have to sort before I go toddling off for the weekend
LSR tomorrow
Friday LSR it was - 21.3 MapMyRun'ed miles out and back without Garmin (refused to wake up) / 3hours:30:19 (1:45:32 at half way) Most of the last 5 miles was into a fierce headwind coming straight off the Firth of Forth an into my face.... 1st 18 minues after the turn into that were the longest I've experienced in a while! But I survived - kept telling myself how much better it would make me in the last couple of miles at Edinbrugh if I refused to give into this wind today Felt good though an felt I could have kept running - not comfortable but I could have done another mile or two I;m certain
Oh yeah - attempt number one at this run resulted in me back in the house after almost a mile cos I'd forgotten to take my juice with me.... Oops!
Saturday REST as we drove to Fort William
Sunday Total 13 miles Now... it was intended to fit in a few - like 4 or 5 miles while cheering........ erm......
Covered about 21 miles on foot with around 13 to 14 I'm claiming as running! I had left the OH at the bottom of Ben Nevis at 9:30 with the intention he'd be up an down in 7 hours-ish an the car was left at mile 7 of the marathon route..... 11:40 - 2.5 miles - running to make my way to mile 10 Headed back walk jogging to mile 7 13:45 - 5.5 miles - back to almost 25 / 1 miles point Walk / jogged to about 23.5 miles point 15:10 - 6 miles / 53:38 (laps - 10:31, 9:10, 8:33, 8:36, 8:37, 8:08) - to about 25 or 1 miles again then about turned an back to 6 with the last mile walk/jog to the car
I then managed to get back to bottom of Ben Nevis before OH - he "won" tho - I really didn't expect him to make it to the top (10 miles round trip) considering he's barely walked further than 2 miles in one go for months maybe years! Think we'll take the cable car today (I did offer to walk back up with him but he says no ha ha - phew!)
Although maybe not all the results folks were after - everyone is well. I had great fun an realised my body is way more capable than I give it credit for
Ooo yeah - I fell off the wagon into a pool of Guinness last night but about to climb back on "To believe with certainty we must begin with doubting." ~Stanislaus I of Poland |
