Well, here it is - 2009 and my first year of having a plan! I did know I'd entered Edinburgh at the start of last year but didn't have a plan other than make it round! The full plan is saved - here's what I'm sharing.......
This year is different to last - I believe I am a runner and I have a plan!!
I am (hopefully) not planning to move house in the middle of it! Although still not sold the flats so may well be kicked out by the bank at some point. Working for a bank may prove a toughy too but I'm happy to face what comes
The end of last years diary had all my PBs and my current PB hopes for 2009 so I've included them here. Once i get into the year and back from holidays mid Feb I may re-assess.
I'm starting 2009 happy with my weight and size and looking forward to running for runnings sake All the PBs I have were set in 2008 - I'm hoping for shiney new PBs in all events again this year..... and stay injury free again (wee knee niggle after mara and a funny foot /calf thing I'm blaming on the wrong trainers - nothing bad)
PB hopes ------- 1 mile.....- I'd love to say sub 6 but happy at 6:30 if I get a good race day (none currently) 2miles....- Sub 14 (14:32) 5k...........- Sub 22:30 (23:42) 10k.........- Sub 47:30 (49:24) 12k.........- mmmmm ?? (none currently) 10miles..- If I do the same (hilly) race then maybe sub 1:24 (1:27:58) Half........- Sub 1:45 (1:50:37) Mara.......- Sub 3:45 (3:59:44) eeek... did I type that out loud
Mileage ------ I'm gonna go for lasts years 1300 target set in about Feb and well and truly missed with only 725! Mostly by keeping focus on improving my 10k time after the Marathon in May and looking to build to another Marathon depending on whether I get guaranteed entry time.....
Races ----- 10th Jan - 5k Great Winter Run - PB 23:27 18th Jan - 12k NTRIX - 1st Time 58:03 (plan sub hour)
24th Jan - 5k Glasgow Parkrun - PB 22:52
22nd Feb - 12.5k Kirkintilloch decided against this need to get training in
1st Mar - 10 Miles Lasswade - PB - 1:19:23 22nd Mar - Half Alloa (maybe) - PB - 1:46:05 29th Mar - 10k Grangemouth - would look to get close to my 49:24 PB here as good course for it. Later in the plan than last year (when I set 50:42 as an over 6 minute PB) BUT I do plan to be in big LSRs at this stage so may be a good run out on tired legs instead. - PB - 45:15 !!! wow
4th Apr - Half Edinburgh - have decided against this too as need to get longer LSR in before week on call and want to be ready for 22 miler on 2nd May
12th Apr - 10 Mile Strathclyde - this one charity one cancelled
2nd May - 22Now a 20 Mile Edinburgh to North Berwick (only if I'm comfy with the 3:30 limit / 9:30 pace for the biggie LSR before Edinburgh) 10th May - Dunfermline Half 31st May - Marathon!!!!
June I plan to take easy But then entered Humber! 14th JUNE - Humber Bridge Half
The calendar isn't so good for the rest of the year but I hope to get a couple of speedy 10ks and another Half Marathon in here Hopefully I'll have the pennies to venture down the hill once or twice where a few of you guys are racing
1st July - Brig Bash 5 mile - Perth 2nd August - Wagon an Horse 10 miles (Lancaster) OR Edinburgh Scottish Gas 10k 6th September - Great Scottish Run Glasgow 10k 20th September - Great North Run Half - hope to train towards this an PB (even if it's no PB course)
11th October - Great Eastern Run Half Peterborough - maybe a PB backup race 25th October - Great South Run 10 Miles - no sure about this yet, expense and travel and congestion on many reports??? However - I would really like a 10 miler to improve my Lasswade time - Jedburgh 10k may be more feasible this day

Good luck with all that Smout. You're PB hopes for shorter distances seem consistent with going under 3:45 for the marathon so don't be too daunted by the challenge - I'm sure you can give it a good crack.

Good luck with all your targets. I look forward to reading about your progress with your targets being a little ahead of mine for this year.
Go girl!

Thanks Folks!
Well my first run of the year is finally in. It felt wonderful and I'm glad I waited till I was over the New Year and travelling as finishing this run on such a high has confirmed my confidence in this year
Saturday 3rd Jan 8 miles increasing effort - 1:08:52 (wee bit downy uppy downy flatty ) 9:06, 9:20, 9:09, 9:09, 8:19, 8:10, 8:13, 7:21 Slightly chilling (still ice puddles and a touch of black ice on the pathway), lovely sunny and still. That last mile is my fastest training mile and was on the flat - including having to run half a mile past my house to make it to 8!!

Eeek... back to work today and little Miss Disorganised to the max! Wet kit went with me to work.... forgot to hang it up.. forgot to change out of trainer and into shoes all day so have clumps of dry mud under my desk..... realised I was coming home before running anyway (so could've left kit hanging!) as I'm on call and had to take laptop home.... aagh... then had to find layers and layers of not so warm kit before I could risk going out....... then nearly crashed OH car into a wall after turning into a wee junction... but I think it seemed closed than it was - mega adrenalin oopsness tho
Monday 5th Jan Total only about 3.5 miles including W/Up & Down Too hard to describe (not as structured as INNERS and OUTERS LOL) but various combinations of the playing fields and speeds (which are not flat!)
.45, .39, .45, .45 + about .5 of 5 * jog to one side and sprint back LOL
AS ever my numptiness played a part and Garmin battery ran out part way thorugh but 1st 3 reps were at 7:24, 7:13 and 7:12 pace.
OH reckons I possibly need a back-up... then made a face when he realised he'd told me I should buy another Garmin But then agreed with his initial thoughts as apparently my statistics are important to me

It must be a first Monday back to work thing...I had a sudden urge to go to the gym after work today but the only kit I had in my bag were full length running leggings, a thermal top and a very non sports bra. I sweated like a pig on the treadmill, my outfit complete with stripy tigger socks because I had no sports socks before returning to my locker to my weekly food shop falling out all over the floor due to me cramming it in quickly on the way in before my motivation disappeared

Tuesday Total 6 mile Far more organised today. 12:30 - 3mile / 35min recovery type ish run / reccy of bits of routes for Jog Scotland stuff. Involved running and stopping to chat about hazards then more running
18:40 - 3miles / 27:59 (9:19 avg) easy run home from work (and good girl straight to Asda for dinner )
Unfortunately - I was then a bit lazy so only just finished dinner
Wednesday 3miles easy-ish too work. 28 mins / 9:19 avg
I was running late as I seem to have misplaced my work pass.... then tried to run a we extra loop to ensure three miles and got sent back by loads of police - some in funny suits (nbut no till I'd actually passed some ) then poceeded to get slightly lost trying to get back on the path (yes - I was only abuot half a mile from my house the whole time ) Found out later apparently last week a head was found (how did I not know this?) and they are still looking for bits OH not happy at me running on the path now
Thursday 45min / 1hr - Pilates Hoping this will help with that core strength stuff some folks talk about. Didn't do any core last year so a new introduction I hope will be a good thing
Friday Didn't manage run to work... still can't find work pass and this am it was the mobile that was missing (but found just as I left) - quick shower and taxi to work got me in on time just!
12pm - 3.5 Miles / 33 Not exactly sure distance / time but a nice not too easy run with the girls who want to join my Jog Scotland stuff. Thing I'm almost roped in to taking them on an evening rather than just the lunch stuff - they seemed to like me being there.... distracting them I think they said
Saturday...... Total 6.7 miles Not here yet but I have Great Winter Run 5k round Arthurs Seat. Hopefully a tad faster than my 27:08 on 21st Dec... although BBC seems to be saying 23mph winds so maybe I wont be much faster.... I feel scared cos that last one was hard with the wind even though it was over 3mins slower than PB...... all good for NTRiX tho
Wooo Hooo PB 23:27 Report in the reports section
1.1 mile WU / 5k race / 2.5 mile WD
Sunday 4 miles Rec Ooo my legs know I did something yesterday. Finally braved the wind and did a recovery run. Had to nip to the flat anyway so....
2.75 miles / 26:32 (avg 9:38) 8 minutes 'rest' while I checked the flat and mail 1.25 mile / 11:31 (avg 9:11)
Week Total 26.7

Just like to say that 'numptiness' is a fantastic word and make your posts fun reading.
I'll echo Krissie's 'be careful' though - just keep you wits about you! |

I promise to be careful on the paths. Never go on them when its remotely dark (or will be soon) unless I have my bodyguard Pete with me.
Laura.... i do occasionally get funny looks with the words I use... OH gave up and joined in LOL
So... a new week..... Have to say - I dont feel at all like I've hurt myself BUT just bizarrely like I've found leg muscles I'd forgotten about! Bits of me are 'there' which I haven't felt since I was about 15, the day or two after running speedy track sessions I am going to take this as a sign I am fit enough to find those muscles
Monday Total (nearly) 3 miles Grass session and the muddiest it;s been out there. My newest Pegasus now look older than the other three pairs.... although they do have a bizare glow of newness around the tongue!! Knew this was gonna be hard so just did my thing without pushing too much and missed out the last run as my calves started to think about it. Some jogging in between (very little 'some')
.5 WU, .55 steady (8:03 avg), .46 'triangles' with 3 fast diagonals (avg 7:55/ max 11.1mph), .35 steady (avoiding dogs) (avg 7:31), .48 steady (avg 7:40).... just had to give in at this point as I don;t wnat to be knacked come Sunday , .5 WD

Aaaaaaaaaggghhhhh!!!! Insomnia has set in again!!! I have been to bed but OH coughing and me being quite wide awake I had to get up again
I'm just blabbing cos it'll make me feel better... I'll be able to read it back in a couple of days when my brain is not jumping about...... and it's stopping me trying to stare at NTRIX elevation and work out how exactly I could possibly somehow keep near Mike and his ridiculous 57:30 challenge!
14th Jan last year I'd just got back from ski-ing.... it was a fab holiday - I was soooo much fitter than the two jaunts the year before (my first ad 2nd ever). OH and I 1st time ski-ing just the two of us. Except that this time round - as I was fitter - he kept mumping at me for zooming... despite the fact (unlike all of them the year before) when he caught up I was quite happy to have a wee rest... head to a wee hut for a shot of something warming and generally apple tasting Midweek I headed off round Sellaronda and loved it then met up with him for lunch. A bit of Apri ski... one in particular where we only got up a few hours later to ski down to our favourite lunch place... sat outside till it opened then Pinot Grigio and pasta Scoiattolo to so help us feel better
Anyways... 15th Jan was the first time I ever ran further than 10k! A 10 miler which seemed to come fairly easily after the skiing at avg 10:09 Roundabout the same time I started getting into the RW forum and BPM meastro Wicked was posting scary looking stats and I think Haggis was telling me off for running tooo fast (I changed this bit - realised it wasn;t our Shaun afterall telling me off!) so I stopped paying too much attention to the HRM and posting the figures! I think I may go back to using it but not worn it since October when I had a mad interval reading of avg 202 / max 237 .. the recovery lowered but I took it off.... the intervals got faster ! Before that I did have a Max reading a couple of times of 202 but never actually tried to find Max
This was also when and discovered I may actually have a sleep issue! Well it comes and goes... but seems my excitement is toooo much and right now my sleep issue has returned!
I'm not too worried... I know it'll get better esp once I get into my plan but darnit annoying as it means I certainly wont get the miles I want this week... 1.5 hour drive to gourock and back tomorrow after work with dinner in the middle..... but may head out at lunch for an easy one with the girls starting out (same as friday).
Hey hey..... may be a good thing... rested legs for that hill on Sunday BUT I am worried OH has the lurg that's trying to get me and no sleep certainly isn;t going to help that!!!! Grrrr
Wasn't going to bother adding this till I did some more but as I'm here now
Tuesday 2 miles / 20 minutes easy after WU and followed with WD as part of the Jog Scotland thing I'm doing. How suprised were we to have I think over 30 folks turn up in total!! A bit apprehensive I headed out with two other leaders with the 15 'improvers' (we defined this as those who thought they could jog for 20 minutes or more already) and my job was to lead the stretches at the end..... I really should show an example and actually do these more often myself
Anyways... most folks seemed happy, were generally not to phased by the faffing at the beginning - they'd been warned we were just starting/ admin / intors etc and the first winner of the £50 run & become voucher seemed pretty pleased
I was especially glad when one lady in particular was very positive about her beginner experience - glad it was not too strenuous but definately will come back and happy to get away from her desk at lunch without too much ummin and aaahing The girls I may run with tomorrow missed the first session due to work commitments so I'll probably take them through ... I already have folks wanting me to do longer stuff / evening stuff..... OH said to me last night "you only go to work so you can run these days don;t you?".......
I kind of had to say yes..... he's (luckily) in a team where they have no option but to do loads of overtime while the rest of us are being kind of turned off from it / asked to take Time Off In Lieu .... so instead of as much work I have been running to work.... and / or home from work.... and / or lunchtime.... LOL and now going to work to take running groups out LOL!!!

| Hi Smout - Hope your sleep issues don't go on for too long & you get some quality zeds in tonight. You have my sympathies with your OH coughing & spluttering it's definitely not easy to get a good nights sleep. I am also with you in that I am happy that MAX is left undiscovered. |

you're bonkers aren't you?
Hope you do get some kip. I'm absolutely useless if I don't sleep well, but luckily that's rarely an issue, as I can sleep just about anywhere. Getting up in the morning is always hard work for me. My wife and kids will all attest to that.
