1st Jan 9km 1hr

Considered doing the NHTT but settled for a slow plod around Newbury. The second run in new shoes & I have a definite ache under the arch of my right foot, not sure if it's to do with the shoes or not. At the weekend I succumbed to persuasion to get a properly fitted pair of runners. Settled on a pair of 2130's which felt very comfy & matched the support of my previous shoes, although paid well over the odds for them - partly due to it being in Euros. The man in the shop said I had a 'durable' running style - I'm taking that as a compliment and assuming something has been lost in translation. Other than the ache am very happy with them and slightly oddly seem to be very much more comfortable running downhill than in previous shoes.

Missed the hoped for 10K on the Linc coast as I was delayed by a teenage party (picking up my daughter from) - but now up in the frozen north visiting my sister for a couple of days in Lincoln.

Targets for the year

5k .... 20:xx
5miles....35
10km......45
10miles...1:15
hm........1:40
mara......probably won't do one but if so hopefully under 4hours (at the 5th time of asking)
weight ..... sub 80

2nd Jan 8.5km 47mins

Early morning jaunt - out & back from hotel. Not too cold this morning. Bit of a gym in the afternoon & a good few lengths in the pool.

3rd Jan 7.5km 39mins

After a late meal last night & a long evening with sisters 2 & 4 reliving childhood memories I just could not raise myself this morning & the full english was a lot more tempting option. Racked with guilt all day (well maybe a slight twinge of regret) caused me to layer up for an early evening jaunt when we arrived back in Marlborough. Lovely clear still starlit evening , -5c, and I did not meet a soul the whole way, if only every run could be as good.

Ache seems to have gone from right foot.

January 4th 16km 1:40

Same run as NYE but this felt a lot harder work. Very reluctant to go outside this morning but quite pleasant when I got there. Hopefully things will warm up a bit before next weeks Rough'n'Tumble - don't really fancy doing it over frozen ground.

Think this cold spell is here at least another week, no doubt at NTRIX it will be gale force winds and sheeting rain after weeks of relative cold and calm weather

January 5th 9.5km 48minutes

After work in Newbury - was meant to be a bit of a recovery run, but finished up quicker as I wanted to get in from the cold. Three layers didn't seem enough & it didn't help that hat and gloves were still damp from the previous day.

Ache has returned to the instep of right foot

I hope you're wrong about the forecast for NTRIX Ian, I like running in wind even less than running in the cold, probably something to do with the amount of surface area I present.

January 6th 7.5km 43minutes

Very cold, very slow & very covered up (even tights).

Ian - I think more of an indication of lack of progress

Saturday 10th Jan North Hants TT 5km 22:05

Very cold this morning (-4c) and some of the paths were a bit on the slippy side and I needed 3 layers on plus hat & gloves. Got to 4km in 17:18 and all was going well but ran out of steam in the last km to finish 10secs outside PB time.

Running in a winter wonderland (well Basingstoke)

Sunday 11th Rough N Tumbe 10.4 miles 1:43 ish

Luckily things had warmed up a bit and the ground had softened slightly today. The races strapline of of 'sweat, mud & hills' sums it up nicely.

Tuesday 13th 9.5km 48:20

Usual route around Newbury - pushing hard towards the end. Down to two layers and still quite warm. No niggles from the weekend.

Probably my last training entry before the weekend as I wouldn't want to give away my top secret pre-race training regime prior to the big event

Thursday 15th 8.5km 42minutes

Greenham route - with 2 hilly loops.

Sunday 18th NTRIX 12km 56:16

Fab day - thanks to all netrunners. So-so race by me - outside my handicap but inside predicted time. Was inspiring to see 4 UKNR shirts in front of me during the long grind back from Loxley, even if they were gradually disapearing into the distance.

Splits were:

4.42 4.23 4.29 4.53 5.03 4.56 4.28 4.24 4.48 4.54 5.01 4.15

Am now going to compare them with MijOs' to see where I can make up those 90seconds!

This was of my old Garmin 101 (brick) as opposed to my new Garmin, i need to calibrate it to have faith in the readings that one churns out distance wise anyway ,I compared my splits to yours and where i lost most time seems to be on 4 5 and 6, the rest were reasonably comparable, i was flying downhill, if i can just master those 3km i should be laughing

My lunch each day this week has largely consisted of one Tesco’s plain and simple Tuna & cucumber wholemeal sandwich, occasionally supplemented by an apple (Braeburn) and a couple of satsumas. This is all very virtuous if slightly boring, such is my life, but the problem is I am being steadily drawn to the hot food counter and especially the portions of ready cooked Southern fried chicken.

Monday was fine, buoyed up by Sundays race & determined to improve my performance & reduce my waistline I barely glanced at the crispy crumbed chicken as I wandered over to the fruit & veg.

Tuesday was harder, I lingered slightly wondering if they really were as delicious as they looked, sitting there fresh out of the fryer drenched in full fat flavour, however I remained strong and strode past.

On Wednesday I actually went to visit them first and may have drooled slightly and it was with a very heavy heart and slumped shoulders that I went back to the chiller cabinets & my cellophane wrapped delight.

Today was the hardest yet, I resolved to avoid the temptation at all. A brief dash in to retrieve sandwich & a quick “no I don’t have & club card & no I don’t want cash-back” and I’d be clear free and well on the way to slimmer of the year. Unfortunately just before lunch I had a text message from OH requesting a “couple” of things she needed me to get for her. The meant a full-on traipse round the whole store, and almost inevitably I was drawn to the Aisle of Temptation. Before I could stop myself I found myself ordering some of this poultry perfection even pointing out to the assistant the plumpest & juiciest looking pieces. I grabbed them guiltily and hurried off to do the rest of the shopping already imagining tucking into my fatty feast a few minutes later. However while completing my purchases I had a bit of resolve and snuck back and left the chicken pieces on the hot food counter (sorry Tescos) and picked up my usual sarnie. So now I’m sitting here (tummy rumbling) determined (but unsure whether I’ll be able) to see out the whole week.

Yes I’m bored today, when did my new job turn into my old job?

I can sympathise with the call of the fried chicken, it used to be one of my favourite foods which is probably why I turned into a lard monster. I still give in to temptation from time to time, along with the siren call of chocolate (why oh why did they make creme egg a year round thing?), but only on long run day, where I've run off close to 1100 calories that need replacing somehow

Reading this though, has given me fresh cravings

Steh auf, geh raus und mach's einfach.
