Nice one Matt. For me those moments of REALLY enjoying a run are in the minority, but it's such a good feeling when they happen isn't it!
Haven't had pizza for a while - may have to have one on Sunday after the Silverstone Half. |

Yeah, don't neglect the early nights Matt. It makes such a difference. Even if you have a restless night before a race, if you've banked some the days preceding, that's what counts.
Good luck with 20 miler incidentally!

Thanks Ian.
I'm feeling generally worn out this week - probably just the side effects of the weather changing and getting to the peak of my training plan. I've been struggling to adapt to the warming weather having done so much running throughout the winter, but that's getting easier with each run. Big focus on eating right, hydrating and getting enough sleep at the moment.
Mon 16th March Rest Mondays have recently been a cross-training day recently but I decided to rest today and make sure I'm able to get through this peak period before tapering.
Tue 15th March 5m - 00:43:59 - 08:48 - avg hr 161bpm/76% WHR Lunchtime run in the sunshine, which was pretty hard going. I forgot to put a compression top in my bag which I normally wear under my running top (which helps a great deal when it's warm) and as a result struggled with the heat. In the end my HR wasn't as high as I thought it might be, but it still wasn't a comfortable run - felt much too much like hard work for that sort of pace. In the afternoon after this run I felt really run-down, like the feeling I get when I'm about to come down with a cold. Not good..
Wed 16th March 7.75m - 01:15:24 - 09:44 - avg hr 153bpm/72% WHR Another warm one but I coped better with it (and I remembered a compression top). Right knee a bit painful and generally felt sluggish. I put that down to having to get up at 5:30 and be in the office at shortly after 6, due to a customer lauching a website (how can an American bank afford expensive content management software in the current climate?) this morning. HR a bit high too, probably for the same reason. I feel much better after this run though, although I think I'll be in bed by 9pm
Day off tomorrow! Car in for MOT and then I'm off for my first sports therapy/massage appointment at http://www.guildfordsportstherapy.co.uk. I feel like I need an MOT myself at the moment.
Plans for the next few weeks:
This Sunday: 20 miler Sunday 29th: Liverpool Half - not sure whether to race this or not.. I probably will but will see how I'm feeling. Sunday 5th April: Kingston Breakfast Run (16m) - intend to run this at marathon pace and generally have a good pre-FLM practice (kit, gels, etc). Friday 10th April: Maidenhead Easter 10 - Will probably push this quite hard as I'm not happy with my 10 mile PB and I'm sure I can improve on it. Again, will have to see how I'm feeling.
and then.. Taper....

Stick with it Matt. Marathon training is hard work but definitely worth it. The end is in sight now, just a couple more tough weeks left. If you're overly fatigued though, take another easier week.
Liverpool Half will be good, will have to make sure we catch up for a quick chat. |

thanks guys. Don't worry - I will most definitely be sticking with it - if I have little else, I'm not short of determination. Or stubbornness as some might put it

I'm knackered too Matt and my whole life seems to be taken up by fitting runs in around work/life and sleep. Tonight I threw caution to the wind, ate Pizza and drank vino galorio

Went for my sports massage/physio appt this morning. Apparently my calves are in great shape, but my quads, IT bands and left lower hamstrings are tight. The tight IT bands are pulling my patellas out of alignment and my relatively weak inner quad muscles aren't helping keep them where they should be. So, I need to work on my quads and IT bands - got some stretches to do for those.
Had a great massage - legs feel really good afterwards. 2.7 mile run home and just scoffed a butty for lunch.

Glad to hear you're finding you can stick with the training Matt. It does get difficult now as the legs feel really heavy as the miles build up. But trust your training and don't be disheartened - believe me when I say it will all come good on the day and it'll be worth it.

Thanks Pete.
I'm feeling rather uplifted right now having completed my 20 miler. Legs are aching of course and I was running slower than I will in the marathon(s) but I definitely felt like I could have done more. Very encouraging.
Week 13:
Mon 16/3: rest Tues 17/3: 5m - 00:43:59 - 8:48 - avg hr 161bpm/78% WHR Wed 18/3: 7.75m - 01:15:24 - 9:44 - avg hr 153bpm/72% WHR Thurs 19/3: 2.84m - 00:26:45 - 9:25 - avg hr 155bpm/73% WHR Fri 20/3: rest Sat 21/3: 5m - 00:44:12 - 8:50 - avg hr 155bpm/73% WHR Sun 22/3: 20.05 miles LSR - 03:18:55 - 09:55 - avg hr 147bpm/67% WHR
Total for the week: 40.64 miles
and you know what? my knees aren't doing too badly
This is cool as well - so far this year I've already matched the total mileage I did in the last 7 months of last year:

So.. it's been quite a day for UKnR.. big race performances from Shaun, Ann and Laura, Helen's training half-marathon and plenty of huge LSRs.. well done everyone
