been in constant pain since Body Pump on Monday evenin legs are fine but I had a day of shoulder agony on tuesday and since then my triceps and biceps have been reminding me that I've obviously neglected them for too long.
as with many things, the pain goes away when I run! yay
Tues 3rd March 5.16m - 00:49:02 - 9:30 - hr 149bpm/69%WHR ridiculously windy. spent a good 2 miles of this running into the wind, largely uphill.
Thurs 5th March 7.88m - 01:09:29 - 8:49 - hr 161bpm/78%WHR wanted to go a little faster today and work hard.. HR a bit high but a decent run.
I've managed to get running kit/weather all wrong this week. Monday (rest) was glorious, Tuesday was cold and stupidly windy and I only had shorts and t-shirt on. Wednesday was fantastic again but I couldn't run due to other engagements, today was cold and drizzling when I started, so I dressed accordingly (base layer, t-shirt, gloves etc) and then the sun came out and I melted
aah well.. a gentle run tomorrow (somewhere between 3 and 5 miles), then the last G3 race on Sat morning, followed by an 18 mile LSR on Sunday. Must remember to get to bed early a few times!

Tuesday was horrible weather up here too. Have fun in the mud on Saturday.
Whilst I'm in here - I got my Skins Powersox last week and tried them out. One of them kept slipping down, which I remember you highlighted as a bit of a problem with Skins socks. Have you got any tips for a) some compression socks that don't slip down or b) how to stop the skins ones ending up round my ankles
Cheers |

a) I can help you with - X-Socks Energizer - http://www.sweatshop.co.uk/Details.cfm?ProdID=3183 - I have two pairs of these now and I think they're more comfortable than the skins ones and they stay up!
b) my skins ones tend to stay up better when a bit damp (e.g. when it's raining).. other than that they fall down a lot

Bugger
Yesterday during the xc race I felt my right knee a little but didn't think much of it. Last night it was fine as it was this morning. We went to a family christening today and at the pub afterwards (where I was on OJ and lemonade, with my afternoon LSR in mind) and had a thai buffet lunch thing - yum. We were a bit cramped and there wasn't much legroom and I think that may have set my knee off, although I must have tweaked it yesterday.
After a sunny morning, the weather turned horrible as we drove home - cold, very windy and heavy rain. However, as we got home, the sun came out again so I decided to see how the knee would hold up and headed out for my run. I didn't get far before it was very clear that I shouldn't be running on the knee like this - quite painful with every step. I could strap it up and run anyway but that's not going to help really.
So.. I did the sensible thing and walked home. This is not the knee that was bad a few weeks ago - that's fine. I must have done it some damage yesterday during the xc race.. So I'm feeling a bit low at missing my LSR - I'm going to have to rest it for a few days and try and get a long run in during the next week. I'm also going to book in with a local sports therapy place.
Trying to be optimistic - I really don't want this to derail my training which has been going really well, but I also want to make sure this doesn't develop into something really serious.

Try not to be too down Matt, I know its disappointing to miss a long run especially for the mind! But the important thing is that you are doing the sensible thing, resting and seeking help. You have some decent milage in your legs and they won't forget that in a hurry.

Hi Matt, sorry about the knee, but like dips said you have got alot of long runs already in your legs so missing one should not do you any harm.I JUST HOPE THE KNEE IS OK SOON.

Mon 9th March Body Pump - 1 hour warm up: 10kg bar squats: 30kg bar chest: 10kg bar back: 20kg bar triceps: 10kg bar biceps: 10kg bar lunges: no weight shoulders: 2.5kg weights abs: no weight really felt my triceps after aching last week but not a bad session. It's really loosened everything up too - last week I was in pain for the whole week after this but now I'm ok.
Tue 10th March 5.03m - 00:46:03 - 09:10 - hr 158bpm/76%WHR I had been thinking about getting up early and doing my 18 mile LSR which I missed on Sunday.. but I decided not to - the knee's not as bad as it was but it's still a little niggly and I didn't want to push my luck. So, 5 miles at lunchtime at around race pace - the knee held up pretty well.

Its all a mind game isn't it? I think you took the sensible option, build up a few miles this week and maybe tackle the LSD at the weekend again. Your doing fine and don't let that mind tell you otherwise.

you and the LSD eh?
I had planned to get out for 8 miles today but we had a major cock-up on the childcare front so I could only be in work for the morning and had an enjoyable afternoon doing school pickup and taking the kids to their gymnastics class. As a result I was in work early and Rena was in work late, so no running today - fingers crossed for Thursday.
mind games... yes, it is a bit.. Still, this week is supposed to be a stepback week, so I'll still treat it as such. Trying very hard to resist the temptation to try and make up the miles! Next week is a biggy though - I have my first 20 miler a week on Sunday so I'm going to make sure I'm fit and ready for that.

Ever have one of those days where you're feeling a bit tired, lacking motivation or generally not feeling up for a run, but you go out anyway and for some reason everything slots into place? I had one of those runs this morning.
Holly (daughter no. 1) was up *really* early - she's been excited about Red Nose Day for weeks. She's recently got into the habit of writing little notes for people (complete with little illustrations) and we've had a few saying "please buy me a Red Nose hairband" in the last week or two (she wanted one of those Red Nose day deely bopper hairbands). We got her one during the week, and they've had the noses for a few weeks now. She chose her red "mufti day" clothes earlier in the week and was up, dressed and bopping about shortly after 6..
I'm on call this weekend, so I decided I wanted to do my Saturday run today and rest tomorrow (I'll have to carry a phone when I run on Sunday). We also have pizza laid on in the office for lunch today, for which we have to donate £3 to Comic Relief. So, I wanted to get out and run mid-morning so I could come back and scoff loads of pizza
So out I went, feeling tired, feeling my knees a bit and into the cold wind. Not really feeling it. After stretching etc I started off and after about a mile it started raining - really, really raining. Thick blobs of rain, you know the type. "One Day Like This" by Elbow came on my iPod, a song which makes me think about getting up in the morning on a bright sunny day ("throw those curtains wide... one day like this a year will see me right") - not very apt for the weather I was out in.
And then I had one of those moments. I realised my Garmin had somehow got paused a while back so I wasn't certain how far I'd gone. I turned up the volume and sped up, relishing the rain - it felt fantastic.. properly soaked through, but not cold, running fast and totally enjoying myself.
I've had a big fat grin on my face ever since. And now I'm stuffed with pizza
Fri 13th March 4.05m (ish) - 37 mins (ish) - 09:10 (ish) - hr .. dunno
Running rocks - most of the time.. some days more than others

Congrats on the pizza intake! And on the run, of course. Amazing what the thought of some post-run food can do to your session!
