| Matt... is it worth seeing a pod or a fizz re your knees? There will be a balance between soreness that is due to extra miles and the body adjusting ......or deciding, especially if you are flat footed( like me) that you need advice re shoes or orthotics.... It's not a path everyone wants to go down but a consultation now may be worthwhile. |

Firstly Matt well done on your training so far. But foremost get that knee seen to or at least fit in some sports massages, self diagnosis is always a dodgy ground even though we all do it.
If it was me...and I know your not (phew!) I would think very carefully about trying to change your running style radically at this stage in the game.
This is your first marathon so just be careful, don't get too blinkered with the miles. Its easy to get wound into the whole mileage game and just keep piling on miles and miles. Your training should be as much about quality as quantity. Smart training You seem to be running six days a week so why not drop a day and if you can't do nothing than use it for cross training...do some pilates or leg strengthening to help with your knee.
There is a tendancy to set huge pressures and goals for the first marathon when in reality the first is often a benchmark for the future, something to work on and improve. Now go forth and enjoy

Cheers for the advice Dips.. sports massage - yep, been meaning to get some of that, but then again we're all credit crunched and I've been trying to avoid the expense.. not sure I can much longer.
I'm currently running 5 days a week and I'm happy to drop a day every now and then if needed, like I did this week. I promise to be sensible well, mostly

Hasn't the weather been superb? The sun just makes me
Drove up to Newlands Corner yesterday for a lovely off road 7 miles in the sunshine on the North Downs. Today's cooler (more cloud) but made for a good 10 mile LSR. In both sessions I focused on my form much more than normal and tried to make a few minor changes - trying to pull my feet off the ground rather than push off the toes and to land on the ball of the foot. These changes seemed to have a positive effect - I found that I was landing without such a straight leg as normal, with the foot below the hip and slightly behind the knee. I ran without the knee strap and had no knee problems at all. Another good side effect is that it really does seem to be a more efficient running style - I ended up running faster without any more (perceived) effort. All in all, encouraging.
Week 9 (stepback week):
Mon 16/2: Rest day (scheduled) Tues 17/2: 4.07m - 00:37:48 - 9:17 - avg hr 155bpm/73%WHR Wed 18/2: 5.01m - 00:45:50 - 9:09 - avg hr 154bpm/73%WHR Thurs 19/2: Rest (knee) Fri 20/2: Rest (scheduled) Sat 21/2: 7m (race pace) - 01:02:30 - 8:56 - avg hr 156bpm/74%WHR Sun 22/2: 10.26 miles LSR - 01:35:14 - 09:17 - avg hr 149bpm/69% WHR
Total for the week: 26.34 miles
First time I actually feel refreshed after a stepback week
On the downside, my missus is starting to express a bit of annoyance at my weekend runs interfering with family time and other weekend duties.. It appears to be time for me to have to start getting up early to do morning runs

oops, better set that alarm clock! On a serious note though, I think you are doing a great job balancing everything. I can't even imagine having time to fit marathon training in at the moment and I don't even have kids so well done on what you are achieving.

I too think anyone with a young family does well to train for a marathon. Its tough on partners especially when they are left with the children all the time. Make a bit of quality time for your wife Matt...why not arrange a babysitter and take her out for the evening even if it is pasta!
My lot seem relieved when I head off for a run...it means I am not nagging them to tidy up and they can sneak off to the pub

......or get her into running. My man used to get really annoyed that 'running came first' until I got him into it and now he annoys me that he won't ever shut up about it!

Claire - I'm so sh1t at mornings in general... the few times I have tried running early I've really struggled.
Dips - Actually we're heading out this week as it's her birthday.. we can't often afford a babysitter so I cook at home quite often, so getting out will be good
Krissie - Rena was actually into running before I was.. she did her first 10k race back before we had any kids and at the time I thought running was something I'd never do. These days she's getting back into it and is doing a local 10k in April and another in May. As well as family time, two full time jobs and spending as much time with the kids as we can, we juggle training.. However Rena's not quite as obsessed as me - I tend to get into something and totally immerse myself in it - she's much more balanced. Oh, and she's not really interested in joining a running club - I have asked.

pancakes!

actually, we had pancakes on Sunday to make sure we didn't miss out this year - it's too easy not to do it on a Tuesday evening - by the time the OH and I get home from work, there's not much time for pancakes before the little'uns go to bed. That said, I'm leaving work early today to get home early and see if they want any more I'm also planning an epic pancake, sausage and melty cheese (and probably brown sauce) creation for my tea

.................i'll just have a couple with syrup and lemon juice please .
Good luck with the early morning running, i much prefer running in the morning as opposed to the evening but it does take some getting used to getting up early though always feel you have missed out on a couple of hours kip! although the feeling tens to disappear after about 10min into a run

Matt... I think you can train yourself to get up early and run...if anyone had said a few years ago I would do what I do I would have laughed but it's second nature now...and is a fab way to start the day.
I wake I coffee I run ...now all I have to do is get Mij back into the habit.... |

I think I need one of those bedside alarm clock/coffee maker things - if a coffee was on the brew when the alarm goes off, I'd get up.
