Today was a good day!
Tue 27/10 - 4.05 miles - 00:37:39 - 9:18m/m - avg hr 77%WHR/161bpm Great to be out running. Full of snot and couldn't breath properly, which goes someway towards explaining the high HR, but I also struggled to keep the pace as slow as it should have been.
This evening I've been to the physio for a massage. Not quite the all clear I was hoping for - in her words, I "have issues in both calves". Hmm. So, the stretching and strenghtening regime will continue, whilst I get back into running again.
Wed 28/10 - 5.04 miles - 00:48:53 - 9:42m/m - avg hr 75%WHR/158bpm Getting there...

Legs tired now, but holding up well. Rest day tomorrow. |

| After a day of rest yesterday, I had planned to do a parkrun this morning, and a long run tomorrow... However, yesterday afternoon I started feeling really ropey again. I've had this cold on and off for weeks now and every now and then when I think it's going away, it comes back and wallops me. I've been struggling on and not taken any time off work - I think I need some proper rest to get over this. |

Perhaps you are simply over doing it...nought to 60 in 2/3 days is not really the route back from injury Mr Dunn. Load yourself up with Vit C and Ecchy stuff..get better then start your return.

Yes take a few days off Matt as I'm going to have to too. Also hit with sniffles, so training would only undermine our recovery!
Get well soon mate!

Matt - your body is telling you to rest matey, so best do as your told, you'll come back stronger because of it
us runners go through Blue/Low periods (I've had plenty this past 12months) when we should listen to our heads and NOT our hearts as regards racing, I REALLY want to race at the moment BUT I'm sticking to my plan of building for next year & targets I have in mind, once you've suffered a low/blue period you know to rest when needed
take your time & build slowly as and when you can, dont jump into quote: nought to 60 in 2/3 days

| yep, v true.. I wouldn't say it was a case of "nought to 60 in 2/3 days" - I kept active at the gym whilst unable to run. However, I haven't really taken this cold/flu seriously and have continued to run and hit the gym throughout that.. so, now I'm going to have a few days of rest and early nights. |

good on you Matt I did the Gym for over 6 years when in the Army THINKING or being taught it was helping BUT when after a few years I was on the road again, I REALLY knew the Gym was one thing BUT the ONLY thing that helps a runner is RUNNING/ROAD time, just my view BUT I had 5/6hours in the Gym DAILY over years(altho I was being trained as semi pro boxer at the time) I really do NOT enjoy ANYTHING to do with gym's now (just my view, as I've been a Gym monkey)
enjoy the rest matey, you'll come back stronger & fitter

| I guess it depends on what your motivation is.. I don't lift lots of weights at the gym - I've been doing mostly cardio stuff (spinning) and aerobic stuff with weights (body pump - lots of reps so not heavy weights) whilst I was unable to run. That said, I don't always think "will it help my running" when I'm deciding what to do. Part of the reason I do body pump is that it's a great calorie burner (and I could do with losing a few pounds) and I like the 'toned' feeling I get from doing it regularly. |

I think its important to do what works for you. I trained religiously in a gym environment for many years in addition to running and swimming, but that was partly due to the fact that I was a BAWLA coach (Coach Level) and lifeguard, so needed to be strong all round.
The last 12 months I would say I have become a serious competitive runner unlike years ago when I entered an odd race here and there, although I ran a fair bit in training then too of course.
As a result of being more serious about my running, I now focus seriously on core work, lunges(all variants), Bulgarian squats, star jumps etc. These definitely help my running by building strength and cushioning in the legs/hips and around the joints, which helps avoid injury. Ideally I should get some swimming in too, but don't have the time due to work/travel. I don't neglect upper body, but I'm careful not to do more than necessary.
The feeling of being well toned has a knock on effect psychologically and inspires confidence in yourself, so I can understand what you mean Matt, as that's how I feel.
Of course there is no better way to improve one's running other than by 'running' as Shaun says, but you can certainly make a big difference with the right combination of exercises.

Spent a superb day yesterday marshalling at the Druids Challenge - details (and link to photos) in the Druids thread in the Events forum - http://aluaka.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~2160~whichpage~4.asp
Sat 7/11 - 1.37 miles - 00:14:34 - 10:38m/m - avg hr 76%WHR/160bpm Warm up run to park.
Sat 7/11 - Guildford Time Trial (5k) - 00:23:54 - 7:40m/m - avg hr 92%WHR/181bpm This is a hilly route, but I'm disappointed with my time today. Over a year since I last did it, but a little slower. HR extremely high and very hard work - still not completely shifted this cold and I've clearly lost a lot of fitness since the summer with the breaks in training due to injury. Still. this was all about assessing my fitness and I know I have work to do!
Sat 7/11 - 1.37 miles - 00:13:18 - 9:42m/m - avg hr 78%WHR/162bpm Warm down run home.
