I know how you feel Matt...mixture of disappointment and relief!
Next year is a new year and best to start it off feeling fit and well...not battered and bruised.
I'm up for a few off road endurance events next year...but none of the turbo/cliff hanging marlarkey.

Matt ...well done on making a reluctant if correct decision... you want to run forever ...there are so many marathons ahead!
And btw ... I can do those asian squats with both feet flat on the floor!I thought I had made them up! When I was marathon training I sat down on the floor.... as I often do ...with my youngst and thought "O'h this position would be a good stretch" ...and have done it since!!! Great to know I was right.... tho me in my pjs on Youtube might not be so appealing! |

Thanks for the support everyone
Typically, as soon as I decided to pull out of the marathons, I came down with a cold. Laying in bed and sympathy don't really happen in my house (young kids) so I've been up and at work and living on coffee and day nurse for the last two days. I've been nodding off all morning today and generally feeling rotten, so I decided to go to the gym... a hard spinning session later and I feel like a different person, although I suspect I may be nodding off again by mid-afternoon.
I've volunteered to be a marshall on the Friday at the Druids Challenge so I'll be there to keep an eye on Mark and LB Should be a larf.
Good luck to everyone who's racing this weekend! |

Had my folks down for the weekend and the cold hit me full on during Saturday afternoon - I was not really with it. Felt much better on Sunday morning so we all went out for a walk on the North Downs - lovely autumnal weather
Mon 19/10: 45 mins Body Pump
Tue 20/10 - 2.06 miles - 00:20:47 - 10:05m/m - avg hr 69%WHR/150bpm Calf feeling *loads* better since the weekend so set off for a short, slow run.. After less than a mile, I started feeling a now familiar tightness deep within the calf - not pain really, just discomfort. I'm pretty sure though that if I pushed it too hard, I'd tear it again or something. So.. it's not ready yet.
I'm going to book another physio appointment and carry on with the gym work. Perhaps next time it feels ready, I'll give it another day or two longer.

I think you're adopting a sensible and cautious approach Matt. I'd be inclined to leave it for at least a few more days too, once it felt OK.
Good luck!

Just caught up with your diary for the first time in ages, Matt. Sorry that you had to pull out of those races, I know how important they were to you. I think you made the right decision. I hope your recovery continues strongly, which I'm sure it will if you exercise a little caution.

Thanks guys..
Last week was a busy one.. I took Wednesday off work to help out at Holly's school - it was the "Autumn Nature Walk" for her year and they needed some parent helpers.. Lots of fun trooping the kids up to the North Downs and back again, and nearly everyone managed to avoid dog poo On Wednesday afternoon my cold came back with a vengeance which made the afternoon-long meeting I was in on Thursday particularly tedious.. This was followed by bowling and dinner and my team somehow won the bowling At dinner, I left before the dessert - that's how crap I was feeling.
Fri 23/10: 45 mins Spinning - needed to do something to wake me up for a bit, and it worked.
Had a fairly quiet weekend.. took it easy on Saturday and just did my taxi duty taking the kids to parties etc. Sunday's main event was a trip to Ikea - how good are those meatballs?
Mon 26/10: 45 mins Body Pump Mon 26/10 - 1.2km on the treadmill - nice and slow and no problems to report.
I'm still full of cold but it's now just a head full of snot and nothing worse. The calf is finally feeling just about right - v short run today after Body Pump and no problems whatsoever.. I have a physio appointment tomorrow evening and hope to get the all clear.
I've purchased a pair of Nike Lunarglides.. I will get back into the minimal thing, but for now I want to do everything I can to make sure I come back from this injury as safely as possible, so a pair of shoes with a little more support/cushioning was in order.. plus, I've been intrigued by these shoes ever since they were launched. Got 'em today and first impressions are good.

Fingers crossed Matt! It's good to hear the calf seems to be on the mend. Good cautious approach to your return has got to be the key and appears to be working thankfully. Hope the Physio gives you the all clear!
I'd be interested to hear how you get on with the Lunarglides. I know HW got some too, but I seem to recall they are a neutral shoe aren't they?

| they're a bit of a mish mash of a shoe really - some say they're best for neutral runners who pronate a little when tired, which just about sums me up.. there is a bit of support and cushioning, and the new fangled foam thingy is supposed to only kick in when needed. |
