As a lopsided heel striker I have found (since visiting an expert ) that the problem can lie elsewhere and needs to be addressed. In my case my immobile hip and ankle with no flexability, I now of course run like a gazelle...well I hope to.

Thu 1st: 45 mins spinning.

Been to my sports therapist on the way home for a good pummeling. Right calf is v tight, which is to be expected with the injury. This should speed recovery up - fingers crossed.

thanks Ian.. it's on the mend - tempted to try a couple of miles tomorrow but I'll probably wait until midweek.

Well it was a frustrating week last week with no running, although I did get to the gym a couple of times for spinning. Not a great week on the food & drink either - curry for lunch on tuesday, Nandos on wed (was on a training course and the hosts paid), fish and chips on thursday night, another curry on friday night (a friend's birthday) and chinese on sat night (my missus chose, as she'd done a 20 mile hike). Plus, too much wine due to an overly generous 2for1 offer at Sainsbury's (a lovely white, normally £8.99 a bottle - £7 for two!?) although actually not too much beer on friday night.

I was on call this weekend which I always dread but I didn't get called out once Rena did a 20 mile hike on Sat and I had the kids so we watched Return of the Jedi - great fun Then on Sunday we all went out for a lovely walk near Wisley up to a semaphore tower - fab. Yesterday afternoon I really wanted to run - the calf was feeling a lot better but I could still feel it a bit so decided not to - didn't do much for my grumpy mood though (and the footy didn't help that either).

So, I ran today:

Mon 5th Oct - 3.02 miles - 00:27:21 - 9:03m/m - avg hr 74%WHR/157bpm
Of course I got excited and went off too quick given the recent layoff - first mile in 8:11. Started feeling my calf a little just after that so slowed and enjoyed the rain and lovely autumnally coolness.

It's 6 days until the Jog Shop Jog and it's not looking particularly likely that I'll be able to take part at the moment. I'll probably rest the leg and go to the gym tomorrow and perhaps try again on Wednesday. If I can't get 5 miles in without discomfort before the weekend, I'll have to skip this race and concentrate on getting right for Beachy Head.. that'd be a shame as this my last opportunity to get a 20 miler in before the mara and it's the only off-road 20 miler I had planned in. Then again, if I'm not careful I won't be able to even do the Beachy Head mara, which would be much worse.

So.. I'm feeling optimistic, but will try and keep my sensible head on. Otherwise Dips will just tell me off

good to hear you're on the mend, Matt. take it easy though and don't run the risk of a DNS at Beachy Head

Ditto to Stephen's comment Matt, its good to know you're coming back now, and as Pricey commented, don't take any risks that could jeopardise your Beachy Head race

So it's now been just over two weeks since I injured my calf and realistically I was very optimistic in hoping it would be better in time to run the Jog Shop Jog this Sunday. Whilst it's healing nicely, it's not there yet. I went to the gym at lunchtime today and started off very slowly on the treadmill, steadily speeding up to a reasonable, but not fast pace. I managed about 1.5km before I felt my calf start to tighten up and stopped straight away and did some stretching and stuff.

I've been doing "Asian squats" - e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_eeGpmVsvI - or, at least attempting them - I can't do them with my feet flat on the floor but I'm nearly there. These are great for stretching the achilles without putting too much strain on the calf, and also stretching the calf itself. I'm also doing plenty of regular calf stretches, heel drops and self massaging the calf.

Next week I'll do some other stuff like body pump, a bit of cycling etc.. I hate not exercising these days

Beachy Head is only two weeks on Saturday and if my calf's not ready, it's not ready.

Fab weekend - continued the kids education in all that is Star Wars on Saturday with "The Phantom Menace" (still a pants film but they enjoyed it), followed by a few hours in the park for a mammoth scooter session, sprint races between the three of them and their Mum (and yes, ok I did one or two) and a bit in the playground. Sunday morning was spent in the local leisure centre swimming pool - my job was to take the little'uns on the big slides (one of which I hadn't been on before and it's well fast - Holly (6) went on it about 7 times) and to help Tom (3) with his little float - he's just stopped using armbands and is now proudly doing "big boy swimming"

It was exciting to read everyone's reports etc. about GER and Birmingham - I love those weekends when there are lots of races on and the reports come in think and fast

Today I went to the gym at lunchtime and did an hour of Body Pump - that first class after not doing it for a while is always a killer. I was a bit apprehensive during the lunge section but the calf held up just fine.. I think it's about 80-85% better now - perhaps I'll get out for a run on Friday or at the weekend.

So, it's 12 days until the Beachy Head marathon. If I'm really lucky I may get a few runs in before this, but it'll essentially have been a month-long taper with very little mileage, and of course that injury. Am I daft to still be thinking of doing this race? If I am able to do it, I'll have to take it very steady - no "racing" at all - I'll hopefully just enjoy the scenery etc.

Good to see progress with the injury Matt.

I think you're right though to approach Beachy Head carefully if you intend to run. If you can restrain yourself not to race it, that may be advisable, although if you're not 100% I'd give it a miss. You really don't want to be taking one step forward and three back.

Only you will know if you're up for it though, so good luck and fingers crossed!

Mon 12/10: 1 hour Body Pump
Tue 13/10: 45 mins Spinning

Big bad DOMS after Body Pump and then a heavy Spinning session left me aching all over last night - in that good way though

After spinning I had a short jog on the dreadmill and got only half a km before feeling the tightness come back deep in my calf. So, last night I decided to pull out of the Beachy Head marathon and the Druids Challenge. I've already lost 3 weeks of training and it's not better yet, so it's just not going to happen.

I'm gutted, but happy that I've made the right decision - I feel like I've taken the pressure off myself to get back running quickly and I can now take my time and get it right. LB's taken my Beach Head place (good luck Wendi) and there's a waiting list for the Druids Challenge so my place will go to someone (and I'll get some money back).

I'm still hoping to do the Turbo-X at the end of Nov and the Hogs Back 8 in mid Dec, but that's it for 2009, apart from perhaps a parkrun or two if I'm feeling up to it later on. In the meantime I'll continue doing stuff at the gym to keep my cardio fitness up and some core work which I've neglected of late.

Sorry you've had to pull out Matt, but I believe you're doing the sensible thing. You don't want to be exacerbating any injuries and putting yourself further back. I'm sure it will all come good for you with the right approach, as you're doing.

Good luck!

sorry to hear that Matt but sounds like the right decision. Just focus on recovery. Those events will still be there next year.
