Tue 22nd Sept - 5.01 miles - 00:49:09 - 9:49m/m - avg hr 73%WHR/155bpm
still a bit tired and it's warm again so this felt harder than it ought to.. and, a bit of deja vu from my first post-RNR run last year - it felt really lonely.

Wed 23rd Sept: rest

Thu 24th Sept - 6.14 miles - 00:59:43 - 9:44m/m - avg hr 72%WHR/154bpm
Still got residual RNR tiredness hanging around and left achilles a bit tender (hence rest yesterday). Nearly talked myself out of this run and perhaps I should have done.. started off nicely, along the towpath for just over 3 miles and then turned round to come back again. No aches, no tightness, all good.. and then at 5.3 miles all of a sudden a sharp pain in my lower right calf - similar, but not as bad as that which I had in my left calf back in June. Argh. Lack of stretching and proper recovery over the weekend to blame? possibly..

So, no LSRs this weekend and possibly no running next week - will swim, bike and do some strengthening. This reminds me that I need to re-incorporate more cross-training into my schedule - I tend to ditch those sessions when I need to up my mileage and that's clearly not helpful.

Hope that calf niggle clears up double-quick, Matt.

Thanks Steve.. it appears to be clearing up really well. Went oop north over the weekend to see my folks. In the car on the way home made some tentative plans about the Druids Challenge and my wife and kids coming to the finish at Barbury Castle on the third day (and then I don't have to drive home!) - that'll be good.

Mon 28th: 45 mins spinning. First time spinning in new gym and the instructor was a very erm.. pneumatic blonde

I'm on a training course in lovely Slough for the next two days so I'll probably rest up and then see about a run on Thursday.

Btw, I think I now know what's been the cause of the calf/achilles niggles. I've successfully stopped heel striking entirely but I've actually gone too far the other way - landing on my toes with the plantar flexed. When you do that, the calf is tensed and taking too much strain.

Basically I need to relax the foot/ankle more and land midfoot rather than forefoot.

And be careful you don't end up with foot problems too.

Your plantar thingy might be tightening up too, try rolling your foot over a tennis ball, back and forth motion. Do some self massage to you calf too...upward motion here.

ok, so I might not get to run on Thursday... I ran up the road from the car park this morning to find a shop to get some change - only a short way, but I could feel my calf after a few steps and it's a bit sore again. I really need to stay off it for a bit.

The Jog Shop Jog is in doubt now (a week on Sunday) but we'll see - the Beachy Head mara is the important target, even if I'm a little unprepared.

Sorry to hear that Matt. Hope you're sorted ASAP. Don't rush it back though and keep your more important targets in mind as you say.

Might be worth getting an expert to take a look/feel. Its ok self diagnosing but as I learnt...we are not always right in our diagnosis. Treatment may aid recovery and advice about recovery is always a step in the right direction.

The Jog Shop is a tough one, the climbs are tough and the terrain can be very uneven with a lot of loose flint and chalk. So you might be as well to think carefully about it.

As LBM says, think about your important targets and be a bit cautious.

I'm with Dips on this one Matt.....get some professional advice. I was off from running for 6 weeks earlier this year with a similar sounding issue .. a sharp pain deep within my calf. Tried to run around it at the time but finished up with problems elsewhere due to overstressing other areas (such as achilles etc) whilst 'dancing around' the injury!

Good luck!

Thanks all.. I know what's up - it's exactly the same as I had back in June/July, but the other calf and this time (thankfully) it's not as bad. After spinning yesterday it felt great but obviously still too soon to run on it yet. Last time I was only out for 3 weeks, so whilst the Jog Shop Jog might not be on, I won't be out for much longer.

I did get a sports massage last time which helped and I'm already trying to arrange one for early next week.

why don't you just stop trying to land on forefoot / midfoot and do what comes natural. A forefoot strike is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY over-rated. Just watch the elites, very few truly midfoot strike.

There are much better ways to improve your running by a greater amount. Stop listening to the Pose/Chi/Whatever other fad hippy sorts over on Fetch

lol.. it was my persistent knee troubles (years of it) which lead to the change and that's 99% gone so well worth it. I'll get there in the end! And btw, I'm not trying to do pose/chi/whatever, just cutting out heel striking.

however, in a way you're right - I've been thinking too much about my gait which lead to landing too much on the forefoot and the calf problems. I need to do what comes naturally, and when I do now it's a midfoot landing.
