Hi Matt. Good to read that you're getting some enjoyable runs in, but a little concerned about the niggley injuries that you're picking up. You've had a very solid year of training and racing so far, and I'm thinking that your body might be reminding you that you need to moderate the loading from time to time, as frustrating as the implications might be.

Another possibility is that the different shoes you are experimenting with might not be ideal for the training volume (and stage of injury recovery) you are at - e.g. those F-lites don't appear to have much cushioning, so using them for an 8+ miler when you have some Achilles niggles might be less than ideal.

Anyway, I hope things are on the up for you very very soon!

I would be careful running in shoes with little support. Too little or too much heel cushioning is bad for the Achilles tendon. Inov-8 F-Lite 230s are really racing shoes for shorter distances...8 miles in them seems a little excessive. Save them for races and use some good support shoes to train in.

Too little cushioning stretches the Achilles tendon. I would also check if the ridge on the heel of your shoe is not irritating the Achilles. I would lay off hill and speed work as this all adds to the aggravation. If it is still bothering you come Beachy Head and the Druids you will need to take the hills easy...i.e walk them.

Steve, you could well be right about the shoes. However I've been a believer in the barefoot running thing for a long time and I've been steadily working towards that, hence the shoe changes. Yes, I've had niggles along the way, but nothing as bad as the knee issues I used to have. I've finally got to a stage where I can run with relaxed feet/ankles and not have to think about form and it be efficient and natural.

I think my recent niggles have been due to a combination of increased mileage (this year over last) plus the adjustment in running style. I am still convinced it's worthwhile though, as i've not experienced any of the quite honestly debilitating knee problems I've had in the past since embarking on this change of running style.

To be honest, I post about my troubles here looking for replies from you all with just the advice you're giving. That said, it just makes me more determined to make what I'm doing work.

I ran the Edinburgh mara and in fact nearly every mile on road mile since the FLM in Newtons, which many would say should only be used for short distances. The move to the f-lites is just the next step. I fully intend to run marathons in these sort of shoes. I just bought a pair of inov-8 roclite 285s for the beachy head and the Druids challenge and whilst they have a more off road friendly outsole, they only weigh 50 grams more. Lightweight and minimal support really is the way I'm determined to go.

I know, I'm stubborn/determined. It's one of my best qualities

Dips - about the ridge of the heel rubbing on the Achilles, that could be it. Previously with the f-lites, I think the left shoe (the affected side) was too loose at the ankle, so rubbing was possible. Before todays run, I tightened it up signifincantly, and that felt much better. New shoes

Matt,

I am in the same camp as you and do a lot of my running in Fastwitches which have barely any support. I am moving down from a very supportive shoe in the Wave Alchemy and whilst the change is gradual it has also been injury free. I have done upto 13 miles iin the fastwitch without issues and I would do a marathon in them if I do another road marathon.

I am getting roclites in the next couple of weeks for the Rotherham 50 race and have been very encouraged by the off road ultra runners that I know who wear them.

In't running brilliant.

I threw my Fastwitches in the bin whilst having a hissy fit at the weekend blaming them for my despair! I do normally wear them at track and up to 10k races, not tried them over a half though.

After years of Brooks Adreneline I have gone back to Saucony for my road shoes with ProGrid Hurricane 11 and really like them they feel really 'springy and bouncy'

Matt...I am notorious for leaving my shoes too lose as I often suffer with a numb foot, while I was Cotswolding I tried tightening the laces and I found it much better for my PF. Common sense really but sometimes we over look the easiest of things to correct!
