Ian, do you use gels or anything like that on longer runs? It might be worth experimenting and having one or two with you just in case - I'd much rather use a gel or two than worry about hitting the wall.
Krissie - the spin classes I've done where the instructor didn't scream were a bit boring in comparison.. or maybe I just like aggressive women |

Tue 4th Aug - 3.45 miles - 00:33:32 - 9:43 - avg hr 70%WHR/151bpm Very humid today so this was a sweaty one. Right ITB a bit tight and right knee a little sore (related).. I'll work on that tonight.
Yateley 10K tomorrow evening.. not sure if this is going to be a PB attempt yet - I'm not currently feeling up to it but we'll see what happens. |

Thanks Matt
I haven't had problems to date running just over 20 miles LSR'S and have had no problems when racing half's, be that hydration or energy. However racing above half marathon and the energy expenditure that entails is unknown territory. I have recently been experimenting with gels though and they do work for me.
I'm currently looking at the best option for hydration actually and am undecided on the belt type arrangements (which allow multiple bottles, so can carry a selection of options - energy/water) or the hydration packs, which look a better option - with the tube arrangement, so hands free. The only downside I see to the latter is cleaning them if carrying anything other than water.
There's actually a good article in last months Runners World on hydration options.

if the race has regular water stations, I wouldn't bother carrying any water yourself - it's just extra weight. On training runs I use a 500ml bottle in a nathan waist pack on anything over 10 miles and up to 18 or so. Anything longer and I get through more, so unless I can definitely get a refill en route, I use a north face pack with a 2l reservoir. I also have a salomon mountain pack (20l) which I use when I need to carry more stuff. Whatever I'm using, it's water mixed with nuun.
Anyway, cleaning.. mix a couple of tablespoons of baking soda in a couple of cups of water, put it into the hydration bladder. Now add a similar amount of lemon juice or lime juice and be prepared for bubbling. Allow that to sit for 30 minutes to overnight and rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Matt
Thanks for the tip ref the cleaning and your hydraton packs
I've been able to get away without water up to half marathon races although I occasionally just grab a sip at a water station. However, as I don't like to stop, I invariably end up not taking on much at all and I spill the rest. It also makes me cough if its too cold and upsets my rhythm.
I figured for longer races than half's I couldn't forgoe the water though, so the hydration packs would avoid me having to stop and the tube thingy would resolve the coughing issue.
I'll revisit that article I mentioned and read a few more reviews on the ones you suggest too. I'll certainly be buying something soon, as mara training is now stepping up.

sorry to interupt guys - I use agisko gel (developed for endurance cyclists) - you buy it in big bottles and it comes with small bottles to mix to the right consistency for you based on body weight. One of these equals about 3/4 sachets - and I use the same 10K belt as Matt for carrying upto 3 of them.
In races I use the stations for water and in training either my camelbak or my innov8 race pro 30 which I love so much I also use it for cycling and commuting "up North".
Anyway - interupt over
Matt good luck with the jog shop and Mara choice - not easy that's for sure!

Interruption very welcome Mike. Thanks for the info/tips. I'll also take a look at your suggestions.
From memory I think the camelbak was featured in the article I mentioned.

Wed 5th Aug - Yateley 10K race 3 - 00:47:46 - 7:36m/m - avg hr 85%WHR/172bpm report at http://aluaka.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~2161.asp
looking back over my recent 5K and 10K races, I think I am still yet to regain some fitness after the 3 weeks out with injury. I ran my 10K PB in May at an avg 87%WHR and yet my 5K PB in July was at an avg 92%WHR! Yesterday's race averaged 85%WHR but my pace was over 20 seconds per mile slower. Hopefully as I build up my longer, slower runs again over the next few months, and with fewer races, I'll be able to get back to where I was.

ooh, distinct lack of diary updates..
after Yateley I was pretty knackered so had a couple of days rest. Then at the weekend I took Holly (6) up to Liverpool for her first match and didn't manage to get any running in over the weekend.
Mon 10th Aug: 8.31 miles - 01:22:21 - 9:55m/m - avg hr 71%WHR/153bpm Tue 11th Aug: 45 mins spinning - 90% seated and nearly all "climbing" Wed 12th Aug: 8.36 miles - 01:23:17 - 9:58m/m - avg hr 74%WHR/156bpm
In the morning we're off to Menorca for a week, staying right here - http://bit.ly/QXsdK - running kit is packed for 2 or 3 runs, but they'll have to be early morning ones as it's looking like it'll be pretty warm

have a good time Matt, if memory serves me right (which is questionable) there are some coastal paths around that area.

Dips - yes, there are. I've got my Menorca walking map with all the trails marked on it -one goes from where we're staying right past a nudist beach |
