Will do Mike.
I did a spinning class today - first time in about 20 months - great fun. Feeling great and so tempted to run tomorow but I'll wait until Friday or Saturday.

Mon 06/07: 45 mins spinning - v enjoyable Tue 07/07: 30 mins on the elliptical machine followed by a swim Wed 08/07: 45 mins spinning again
Now my quads are well and truly feeling like they've been worked.. possibly because of the two spinning sessions, but also possibly due to dehydration today thanks to the far too much wine that was consumed last night whilst watching the first two episodes of the new Torchwood series.. ho hum
Planning to run at the weekend! and hopefully I'll be able to get a massage in this week or next. |

Hope the run at the weekend works out Matt - but listen carefully to what your body is telling you during your first few runs. Fingers crossed that it is all OK.

Thu 09/07: Body Pump, 45 mins.. warm up, squats, bench press, clean and press and upright rows, triceps, biceps, abs and stretching. All (apart from the stretching) with weights between 10kg and 24kg on the bar. Fri 10/07: Rest Sat 11/07: Sports massage in am (90% all clear) and Guilfest in the pm.. saw Athlete and the Charlatans
Sun 12/07: I ran! 3.4 m - 00:34:02 - 10:00m/m - avg hr 75%WHR/156bpm Felt great, although HR high.. possibly due to this being my first run in 3 weeks and a late night (and a few drinkies) and not great food yesterday. Was bloody brilliant though

Hoping to be competitive again by September so ........

Fingers crossed for no more problems...you have certainly kept yourself well cross trained in the time you have had off!

Thanks guys..
After the run on Sunday all was well, but after Spinning yesterday the calf is a little tender and sore. Delayed reaction from the massage on Saturday methinks. I was going to run today but have elected for a day of rest instead. Had a bag of frozen veg on it last night and I've been gently massaging it from time to time - should be ok to run on tomorrow.
Perhaps I'm being overly cautious, but the last thing I want to do is to mess it up again after 3 weeks out. I'm starting to get slightly concerned about the QMR 10k next Tuesday (I may switch to the 5k) and more importantly the Down Tow Up Flow Half on Sunday 26th - that's one of my favourite races and not one I want to miss.

Great to see that you are running again, mate.
I don't think you are being overly cautious at all. Listening to, and responding to what your body is telling you is exactly the right thing to do, especially when coming back form injury. Regarding the 2 races that you have in your sights: I hope that you are in good shape for them - but don't make the fatal mistake of racing if your recovery isn't progressed far enough, as that could set you back big time. Fingers crossed for you...

Ditto to Steve's comments Matt, but I hope you're OK to compete in your imminent races. Good luck!

Mon 13/07: 45 mins spinning - pushed this much harder than last week and the calf felt tender afterwards Tue 14/07: rest
Wed 15th July - 3/1 run - 6.01m - 01:00:28 - 10:04 - avg hr 78%WHR/161bpm Superb. Started off taking it very easy with 4-5 miles in mind. HR was high but I kept the pace to around 11m/m. All was well so extended route to 6 miles and sped up to 8m/m for the last 1.5 miles or so, making this a 3/1 run of sorts. The calf is still a little tender but I think that's just residual scar tissue. Felt better the longer the run went on

Funny you mention that Matt, I've noticed a disproportionate amount of expletives when completing 5k's compared to other distances

Thu 16th July - Body Pump - 45 mins warm up, squats, bench press, clean and press and upright rows, lunges and squats, shoulders, abs and stretching. All (apart from the stretching) with weights between 10kg and 24kg on the bar.
Fri 17th July - 5.15m - 00:53:25 - 10:22 - avg hr 71%WHR/152bpm great lunchtime run in the rain on a hilly route. HR starting come back to normal now and no calf problems apart from a slight stiffness until properly warmed up.
Some of my colleagues went to Nando's for lunch and brought a chicken pitta back with them for me.. yum |

mad busy weekend - went up north to see my folks and got back late last night - horrible traffic, heavy rain and bored kids.. I think it's time to invest in an in-car DVD player. Had hoped to get out for a run when we got back but it was too late.
Mon 20/07: 45 mins spinning
Tomorrow is the last in the Queen Mother Reservoir 10K/5K series.. I've decided to switch from the 10K to the 5K as I've not got a lot of mileage in recently and I want to save something for the HM coming up on Sunday. The good news is that my 5K PB is about 9 months old so even with the lack of training a new PB should be on the cards |
