calf injury update: it seems worse yesterday and today - more stiff, more painful and a lovely shade of yellow on both the shin muscle and the whole calf. my foot is also swollen a bit below the ankle and there's some evidence of blood that's trickled down there - nice big red patches below the skin. All in all it's feeling rubbish
On the up side, I have a physio/sports massage appointment next Tuesday morning to look forward to - it may be too soon to massage the calf itself, but hopefully I can pick up some tips to help aid recovery. I'm also planning to start swimming next week at the local Lido which is open late on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
I was due to do a forest trail 10k next Tuesday evening near Bracknell but I've volunteered to marshall instead. Should be fun |

Matt, be very careful and make sure you give this one time to heal. You might find wearing a heel pad eases it. It will raise the heel and shorten the calf muscle which should take some of the strain off. Best to wear heel pads in both shoes though, you don't want an imbalance causing other problems.

Had a nice swim yesterday after work. Been years since I've tried to do any proper swimming and my technique is all over the place - particularly bad at getting the breathing right, which I think is fairly important. Hats off to Krissie and Mark in their tri endeavours.
Tonight I submitted to a massage. In her words, my calf is "a mess." She said it was a pretty bad tear with some knock on damage elsewhere in the calf. Very painful massage - she got her thumbs right in there. I'm told I need to do loads of stretching, and when I can do that with no pain, move on to strenghtening exercises and when I can do those with no pain, I can think about running again. It's still bruised and slightly puffy but getting better by the day.
I'm going to take up a 3 month membership at the David Lloyd gym near work and get stuck into swimming and cross training as well as the stretching and hopefuly I'll be ready to run again in a couple of weeks.

Sorry to hear the news Matt and good luck with the rehab! It certainly sounds like a painful injury.
As others have said, don't rush it. Come back strong and fully recovered. Opting for swimming is an ideal alternative and will certainly aid your recovery.

Commiserations on the injury Matt - I guess your volume of training and competition has taken it's toll. As has been said, give the injury time to heal properly before you rush back into things, and then take a measured approach to your rehab.
In the mean time, enjoy the swimming and cross-training!

...I still choke and drown if I have a month off swimming and then get back in the pool. You definantly lose it if you don't use it!
Seriously though, wishing you a speedy recovary.

Thanks for the kind wishes folks..
Yesterday I re-joined the David Lloyd gym near work where I used to go. 3 month contract, no joining fee, £45 a month. Bargain After getting that sorted out I had a decent session on the elliptical and then a quick swim.
Last night I ran through all my calf stretches and strengthening exercises and was happy to find that I could do everything without pain. However, this stretch: http://www.exrx.net/Stretches/Gastrocnemius/Step.html is currently very hard to do.. that muscle is very tight indeed. I'll make sure I can do that more easily before running again.
Heading back to the gym at lunchtime today.. |

Matt - good luck with this mate. Can I seriously recommend going to yoga classes - an hour of stretching reachers the parts that others can't reach. And if you find a 90 minute class you will find the relaxation achieved is wonderful.

Wed 01/07: good session on the elliptical machine followed by a swim Thu 02/07: same again Fri 03/07: calf feeling stronger so on the stationary bike - 16.5 km in 28 mins (including cooldown) followed by 10 lengths of the pool
Lots of stretching over the weekend and on Sat afternoon we went for a good hour or so walk on the North Downs Way with the kids, culminating in a look at Watts Chapel in Compton - http://yfrog.com/0lodbj
The calf is feeling stronger by the day and I'm planning to get back out running towards the end of the week or at the weekend - can't wait! |
