Thanks everyone

I enjoyed the Expo today.. bought some gels, a new pair of compression socks and just one big purchase - a pair of Newton running shoes. I went to have a look, had a brief run in a pair and fell in love with them. Might see about training for Edinburgh in them.

I also had a gait analysis and a 3D foot scan at the Asics store.. they recommended the very shoes I switched *from* 6 months ago due to the problems they were causing me At least they confirmed I'm wearing the correct size shoe.

Saw Liz Yelling (looking very pregnant) and Mike Gratton (who I see quite often at races) and had a good gander at the new Garmin models.. good stuff.

Mon 27th April
Rest

Tue 28th April
Rest and a sports massage - I was really lucky and got a late cancellation. Lots of work on my right quad which had been really sore after it cramped up during the marathon.

Wed 29th April
3.33m- 00:32:32 - 09:46 - avg hr 152bpm/71% WHR

Legs were feeling loads better this morning so had a recovery run at lunchtime. First run in my Newtons too.. Legs a little heavy but not too bad.

one more thing.. Now a couple of days have passed, I'm feeling much more positive about the whole FLM experience. I've decided not to enter the VLM ballot as I still feel the same about the crowds/noise/etc but I'm much happier with my performance after reflecting for a couple of days.

Its strange how our feelings change as the days go on. I can remember being disappointed with my Berlin marathon time despite doing a very impressive negative split. It took me a while and some encouraging chat at my local RUN shop to turn the whole experience around in my head. On reflection Berlin was my favourite marathon and I think I just got too hung up on my time.

Edinburgh will be different again I am sure, don't expect rolling scenery, as in parts it is down right boring but its not nearly as crowded and the support is very sporodic.

I actually think Beachy Head will float your boat more than any city marathon.

How do you find the newtons? Do they improve your running style? It'll be interesting to see if they are as good as the marketing suggests.

I think you're right about Beachy Head Dips

Dave - I've only run in them once so it's too soon to tell, but they certainly feel like it's way more natural to run mid/forefoot. That's something I've been trying to do, so anything that encourages this has got to be a good thing.

It's been a top weekend here.. Kate and Tom were 3 on Saturday - we got a bouncy castle in the garden for the day and had a little party. Lots of fun, and yes, I did have a go Yesterday morning my Dad and I built a big trampoline in the garden which the kids all absolutely love. Then a really nice LSR...

Sun 3rd May, 2pm - 10.26m - 01:38:49 - 09:38 - avg hr 75%WHR/157bpm
Only 10 miles, but nice to be back out after more or less a week of rest.

I'm going to build the mileage back up over the next two weeks. I have the Marlow 5 next Sunday and a 20 mile run planned for the weekend after, and then two weeks taper leading up to Edinburgh. For the 20 miler, I may do the Marlborough Downs Challenge - http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/events/viewevent.asp?sp=&v=2&EN=48328 - not decided yet.

Becareful sticking a 20 miler in there, you do need to think seriously about recovery. The milage is in your legs from the marathon and its training so don't go mad and end up knackered or/and injured.

From Bruce Tulloh ...
Six weeks is the minimum interval between marathon-type efforts because you need at least two weeks to recover, followed by a couple of weeks of normal training before tapering off again. During the two weeks of training you should not attempt anything which is long and hard; instead, work on shorter distances to improve your VO2max, such as fast running over 400-1000m stretches, but your long runs should be really slow.

And see Hal Higdon: http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/multiple/Multiplemara.htm
