I came across this site this morning which describes a six week training program which can get you to work up to completing 100 consecutive push ups. It could be a decent part of a cross-training program as it doesn't take up much time. Push ups are something I really struggle with so I might give it a go..

The mere thought of 100 push-ups is enough to make me not bother looking at that site Sounds like hell! I know strength training is something I should do but I have always struggled, I always seem to conveniently get distracted half way through a strength session by something more appealing....like the sofa!

Its definitely something I should do a lot more of. I've always struggled with the core muscles and need to work more on that side of things.

It's very intriguing and I am tempted to give it a go, but I have to questions really...

1) Why would I need/want to do 100 press ups?
2) Would this make me better at running (and if so, how)?

Hehe.. that's very you Stephen, so focused

As you're so focused on running, it may not be for you. I see it as a good cross training type of thing which only takes a few minutes each day. That said I haven't started it yet - I may do soon. For me the interest lies in the knowledge that I'm pathetic at pushups - I have very little upper body strength and I'd like to improve that.

am redressing my upper body strength myself, as i,ve lost a lot of strength due to arm/sholder injury after a accident, and swimming training programme, which meant i shot up a shirt size in just bulk,so need to trim that down.... can prob bang out 40+ at mo but .....
i,m doing it to improve my core strength, we aint all Racing Snakes like Stephen... i was once!!!but i,m guesing his core strength is quality anyhow... envy envy,,,

I do work on my core strength (abs) although guess I should include some back strengthening too. I'm very cautious about putting upper body strength on though as it's more weight to carry around. I'm just wondering whether a bit of toning/strength may be useful to maintain form etc.

Matt, I see you've noticed that my main thought is always whether things will improve my running. I just figure, I'm running good times now and I want to see how much quicker I can get. Maybe when I peak I'll pick the cycling up again as I used to be good at that. I like to think I could make a very good duathlete.

i,m with you on the weight gain and humping it around.....its that fine balance of finding what works best for me....i went up 15k in 10 years, mainly down to weight training being main exercise, then footie and running very sadly third....although i was still running approx 10 miles a week to gym..
A high protein diet, creatine and other excess!!! helped to put it on but shifting isnt easy....although i,m still a 34 waist.
i,m guessing and working on getting faster by losing around another 8k intially, i,ve dropped around 5 since May.
I reckon Dualthlon is something you would fly at ( i think i remember you saying about your family history and cycling ) but keep on being one hell of a runner for now!!!!

Makes sense to me Stephen.

I don't think I'm ever going to be at your standard. My focus is on health and general fitness, and doing things I enjoy. I love running, that's why I do it. I want to improve my running, but there are other things I want to do to. Basically anything that's going to make me stronger in some way appeals to me.

I've not even tried yet Mark but I doubt if I match your impressive 38 without a fight
